KKST (98.7 FM, "98.7 Kiss-FM") is a radio station broadcasting a Urban contemporary format. Licensed to Oakdale, Louisiana, USA, the station serves the Alexandria area. The station is currently owned by Cenla Broadcasting Licensing Company, LLC.[1] its broadcasting in Alexandria and smaller Natchitoches
History
The station previously had the callsign of KCWR with a power of 10,000 watts from their current tower location in Forest Hill, Louisiana. The callsign was changed to KGBM on September 6, 1982 and once again less than 2 years later to KICR. The station increased power to 34,000 watts as a class C1 radio station in 1995 with a callsign change in 1997 to the current KKST. The power was increased again in 2006 to its present 48,000 watts at 321 meters on a shared tower with sister stations KRRV-FM and KZMZ.[2][3]
This station received its current format of Urban Contemporary upon the sale of KKST from Clear Channel Communications in 2006. This format was on KEDG, a radio station that Cenla communications was operating under a LMA from Flinn Broadcasting. That agreement ended when Cenla bought four radio stations from Clear Channel, as this would put Cenla Communications over FCC rules on the number of stations under ownership or control in a market (Local area) the size of Alexandria. Not wanting to lose the number 1 station's format,[4] Cenla promptly removed Adult Contemporary "Star 98.7" and installed the "Kiss 98.7" in its place.
The "Star" name and format was later picked up by KEDG as part of their reformatting and rebranding as "Star 106.9" to replace the format installed here.
