Kakegurui - Compulsive Gambler (Japanese: 賭ケグルイ, Hepburn: Kakegurui) is a Japanese manga series written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Tōru Naomura which began serialization in Square Enix's Gangan Joker from 2014 and is licensed in English by Yen Press. A prequel spin-off manga, Kakegurui Twin, began serialization in Gangan Joker from 2015. A television anime adaptation by MAPPA began airing in Japan from July 1, 2017 and is licensed for streaming by Netflix.

Plot

Hyakkaou Private Academy houses the most wealthy and privileged students of Japan, with many future leaders and professionals graduating from the school. In this school, the student hierarchy is determined by a series of games in which students bet their fortunes against one-another, and those in debt become slaves to the whims of those who hold their money. One day, a new student appears, one who gambles for the thrill of it, who actively begins to disrupt the hierarchy of the school while the student council tries to find ways to shut her down.

Characters

Main characters

Yumeko Jabami (蛇喰 夢子, Jabami Yumeko)
Voiced by: Saori Hayami[1]
The main protagonist of Kakegurui, a new transfer student to the school who shakes things up by engaging in an increasingly risky series of gambles that put herself and her money on the line. She gets a thrill out of the mere act of gambling, and can quickly figure out ways that the games are being manipulated in her opponents' favor. Yumeko can more often than not turn the tables on her foes.
Mary Saotome (早乙女 芽亜里, Saotome Meari)
Voiced by: Minami Tanaka[1]
A student in Yumeko's class who began as an antagonist, but after being humbled in a jankenpon game, she later becomes Yumeko's rival and ally, but maintains a dislike for Yumeko's character. In Kakegurui Twin, Mary acts as the main character who starts out trying to free her childhood friend from debt, but soon becomes enmeshed in the school's culture of gambling.
Ryōta Suzui (鈴井 涼太, Suzui Ryōta)
Voiced by: Tatsuya Tokutake[1]
A student with good grades but is very poor at gambling. In the beginning of the series, he amasses a massive debt to Mary due to his poor luck and serves as her "dog," helping Mary manipulate a game. However, after he is freed from the debt, Ryota serves as an ally to Yumeko. He often tries his best to keep Yumeko out of any sticky situation whenever possible, which normally proves to be impossible. Though he doesn't do much, he does at one point serves as Yumeko's comfort where he pulls her back in reality every time she goes on a ecstatic compulsive gambler mode. He is a kind-hearted person, and holds little ill-will to anyone including Mary despite the abuse he suffered under her. Despite his own lack-luster personality, Yumeko seems to enjoy keeping him around, trusting him with her own life at times.

Supporting characters

Kirari Momobami (桃喰 綺羅莉, Momobami Kirari)
Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro[2]
President of the Student Council who got the position by defeating the former president in a high-stakes game two years ago. Upon taking office, she created the hierarchy that turns the students with the largest debts into "house pets". It is hinted that she has a certain attraction to Yumeko and may even have met her before.
Ririka Momobami (桃喰 リリカ, Momobami Ririka)
The nondescript masked vice president of Student Council who is frequently seen with Kirari. She is revealed to be Kirari's identical twin sister.
Midari Ikishima (生志摩 妄, Ikishima Midari)
Voiced by: Mariya Ise[3]
Third-year student and head of the Beautification Committee. Midari wears an eyepatch after stabbing her own eye out to pay her gambling debt to Kirari, but stayed loyal when Kirari offered to kill her in the future. Midari gets aroused through increasingly violent gambles where the participants can either be maimed or killed, especially after challenging students to modified versions of Russian Roulette. After Yumeko forces her into a bloodless draw, she becomes attracted to her as well. Yumeko however dislikes her deeply, for various reasons, one of which is how Midari ruins the chance of risk, whether it is hoarding it all for herself or prematurely killing suspense.
Runa Yomozuki (黄泉月 るな, Yomozuki Runa)
Voiced by: Mayu Udono[4]
A student council member who likes video games and is always seen wearing a hoodie with rabbit ears. Spends her time taunting various students. As a gambler, her skill has not been revealed, but in the 'Re-election Arc' of the Manga, she proved herself to be a completely impartial mediator.
Kaede Manyūda (豆生田 楓, Manyūda Kaede)
Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita[5]
The ambitious Student Council Treasurer who seeks to become the President at the earliest opportunity.
Yumemi Yumemite (夢見弖 ユメミ, Yumemite Yumemi)
Voiced by: Yū Serizawa[5]
In public, a part-time idol hoping to make it big and the Student Council's head of public relations. Secretly hopes to be an Academy Award-winning actress in Hollywood in the future and hates having to deal with her Japanese fans, viewing them as disgusting and perverted. She challenges Yumeko to a game of tic-tac-toe with a variety show challenge.
Sayaka Igarashi (五十嵐 清華, Igarashi Sayaka)
Voiced by: Ayaka Fukuhara[4]
Secretary of the Student Council and a close ally of the President. It is implied that she has romantic feelings for the President, and wants nothing more than to make her happy.
Yuriko Nishinotōin (西洞院 百合子, Nishinotōin Yuriko)
Voiced by: Karin Nanami[3]
Head of the Traditional Culture Research Society and a member of the student council, who quietly uses her position to shield the club's girls from being enslaved by others. She runs a rigged roulette-style game of "Life or Death."
Itsuki Sumeragi (皇 伊月, Sumeragi Itsuki)
Voiced by: Yūki Wakai[6]
A student council member who is a daughter of a toy company CEO. She likes collecting human nails, which she removes from her opponents fingers after they lose to her. After losing to Yumeko in a game of Concentration, she loses her seat on the student council as well, and begins appealing to Yumeko in hopes of regaining her position.
