The Donkey Kong video game series is a franchise of platform games and other genres (including racing and rhythm games) published and produced by Nintendo. The games have been developed by a variety of developers including Nintendo, Rare, Namco, and Paon. Most Donkey Kong games have either been released for the arcade or Nintendo video game consoles and handhelds dating from the Nintendo Entertainment System to the current generation of video game consoles. Some of the original arcade games, however, were ported into versions on third-party home consoles and developed by several developers. The series debuted for the Arcade in 1981 with Donkey Kong, which was a sales success and brought Nintendo into the North American market.[1]

The franchise revolves around Donkey Kong and his family, who are usually the series' protagonists, in a series of adventures. The Donkey Kong games are unique from other platformers in their use of supporting characters throughout gameplay. This and other changes in gameplay from more traditional works in the genre distinguish the series from other franchises.[1] The Donkey Kong series is among the best-selling video game franchises with over 49 million games sold worldwide.[2] The success of the series is commonly placed on its technical innovation and entertaining platforming sequences.[1] The latest game in the series is Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again!, a puzzle variation on the original Donkey Kong arcade game available only through download on the DSiWare service.[3]
