Restructured the sentence to flow better without ESL and removed link to the ESL page, as it isn't very useful and relevant to the page at large. undo

A perception of the two English vowels /ɛ/, and /ɛə/ ~ /ɛː/, both being—before the letter R—/ɛ/, is limited to speakers of English who have the Mary-marry-merry merger in their speech. In terms of vowel, Japanese would not transcribe "ferry" in the same way as it would transcribe "fair" or "fairy." Compare 「メリー」 [merry] to 「メアリー」[Mary]. undo
  • curprev 01:3101:31, 28 January 2024Tharthan talk contribs 25,376 bytes −148 The reversion misunderstands the edit summary. Japanese's treatment [no attempt to preserve in some fashion any distinction in the Japanese forms; L and R are simply transcribed with R-kana] of R and L in German loanwords comparable to the English, suggests that the removed text's uncited claim that Japanese's approach to English borrowings is "so that syllable-final '-r' and '-l' can still be distinguished" is incorrect. The deleted continent isn't about German and it involves the non-rhotic treatment of final r, which has nothing to do with the Mary-marry-merry merger. undo Tags: Twinkle Undo Reverted
  • curprev 22:1922:19, 27 January 2024Tharthan talk contribs 25,376 bytes −148 Removed information that is factually incorrect. First of all, in loanwords from German, for example, R-kana are used for both L and R [ex. 「アルバイト」, 「エステル」, 「グレーテル 」「エルンスト」, 「カルテル」). Secondly, unless Japan specifically chose to transliterate from an accent that had the Mary-marry-merry merger, a theoretical rhotic transliteration of "bear" and "bell" would not both correspond to 「ベル」. "bell" would be 「ベル,」 but a rhotic transliteration of "bear" would result in either「ベール」 or 「ベアル」. undo Tag: Reverted
