The Madhya Pradesh cricket team is a domestic cricket team based in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It competes in the Ranji Trophy.
History
Holkar cricket team
A Central India team competed in the Ranji Trophy between 1934–35 and 1939–40, playing 12 matches.[1] In 1941, Holkar entered the competition, organised and managed by King Yashwantrao Holkar II belonging to the Holkar dynasty of the Marathas. In the fourteen years of its existence Holkar, which included such players as C. K. Nayudu and Mushtaq Ali, won the title four times and finished second on six other occasions.

Another Ranji Trophy team later to be absorbed by Madhya Pradesh was Gwalior (one match in 1943-44).[2]
Madhya Pradesh team
Madhya Pradesh began competing as a team from 1950-51. Holkar appeared in the Ranji Trophy till 1954-55 after which it was dissolved and replaced by a Madhya Bharat team. This became part of the Madhya Pradesh team after two years as the states were reorganised.
The finest achievement of the Madhya Pradesh team is reaching the final of the Ranji Trophy in 1998-99. They took the first innings lead against Karnataka and needed only a draw to win the title but collapsed in the final session of the last day to lose with five overs to spare.[3]

Famous players
CK Nayudu, CS Nayudu, Denis Compton, Bhausaheb Nimbalkar, Khandu Ranganekar, Narayan Nivsarkar.
- Mushtaq Ali - played for Madhya Pradesh in the early years after Holkar ceased to exist.
- Hiralal Gaekwad - played for Madhya Pradesh in the early years after Holkar ceased to exist.
- Chandu Sarwate - a off-spinner represented India nine times between 1946 and 1951-52. He played for Madhya Pradesh between 1958/59 and 1967/68 but the Test appearances had come during his time with Holkar
- Rajesh Chauhan took 47 wickets for India in his 21 appearances and played a significant role in India's home victories in the 1990s
- Narendra Hirwani, who was born in Uttar Pradesh, spent twenty years in the Madhya Pradesh team and took more than four hundred first class wickets
- Amay Khurasiya made a few appearances for the Indian one day side at the turn of the 2000s
- Naman Ojha - made his ODI debut in June 2010 against Sri Lanka.[4] He got out scoring only 1 run in that game and has not played for India since then.He currently plays for SunRisers Hyderabad in the IPL.
- Devendra Bundela - played 100 first-class matches for Madhya Pradesh
- Ishwar Pandey - has played for the India A Team and has been selected in the Indian Test and ODI squads for the New Zealand tour of 2014. He was bought by Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2014 Auction for Rs 1.5 crores.
- Jalaj Saxena - played as an allrounder for the India A cricket team and was signed up by the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians in 2013.
- Harpreet Singh - has represented India at the 2010 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
- Sandeep Patil - professional cricketer from Bombay
- Chandrakant Pandit - captained the team between 1994 and 2001. It was under Pandit that MP reached the 1999 final.
- Jai Prakash Yadav - played for Railways and India. His highest first class score of 265 is the best ever by a Madhya Pradesh batsman.
- Ankit Sharma - Plays as a spin bowler for Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket. He is a left-handed batsman and a slow left-arm orthodox bowler. He is currently part of IPL Pune team.
