Maithon is a census town in Dhanbad district in the Indian state of Jharkhand. It is situated on the banks of river Damodar.The name has been derived from Maithan or Mai-Ka-Than, the than,or the place of Mai,the mother, of all human beings-a reference to Ma Durga or Ma Kalyaneswari.

The Kalyaneswari temple 6 km away from the Maithon dam is considered to be the seat to a very powerful deity, Ma Kalyaneshwari. The temple was erected in the early 1900's

Demographics

As of 2001 India census[1], Maithon had a population of 19,728. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Maithon has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 67%. In Maithon, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Places To Visit and Tourism

Maithon Dam Maithon is also the location of a dam called the Maithon Dam. The Maithon Dam is on Barakar river that flows through West Bengal and Jharkhand. Maithon Dam is 48 km from Dhanbad and around 25 km from Asansol.The dam was designed for flood control and is the biggest reservoir in the Damodar valley. This dam is part of the larger DVC Project and augments irrigation in the region. It also produces thermal and hydel electricity. It was the first underground power stand in South East Asia. It receives a steady and daily stream of tourists.

Maithon Hydro Electric Power Plant Set up under the First Five Year Plan, it is the first underground Hydro-electric power station in South Asia.
