Template:Spanish name Marc Bartra Aregall (Catalan: [ˈmarɡ ˈbartɾə əɾəˈɣaʎ], Spanish: [ˈmarɣ ˈβartɾa aɾeˈɣal]; born 15 January 1991) is a Spanish professional footballer who plays for FC Barcelona and the Spain national team as a central defender.
Club career
Born in Sant Jaume dels Domenys, Tarragona, Catalonia, Bartra moved to FC Barcelona's youth system, La Masia, at age 11, after starting his formative football years at neighbours RCD Espanyol. After progressing through its ranks, he was promoted to the B-team in 2009.[2]
On 14 February 2010, one month after his 19th birthday, Bartra made his official debut with the main squad, coming on as a substitute for Jeffrén Suárez for the final 30 minutes of the 1–2 loss to Atlético Madrid at the Vicente Calderón Stadium.[3] He started his first La Liga game one year and three months later, playing the entire 0–0 home draw against Deportivo de La Coruña.[4]
On 21 May 2011 Bartra scored his first goal for Barcelona's first team, helping the side come from behind to win it 3–1 at Málaga CF, in the season's last round.[5] Definitely promoted to the main roster for the 2012–13 campaign he found opportunities hard to come by, with manager Tito Vilanova even preferring to field defensive midfielders Javier Mascherano and Alex Song in case of injury or suspension, as well as full back Adriano, instead of him;[6][7][8] he finished the year with 16 appearances all competitions comprised, totalling just 902 minutes of action.
On 24 September 2013 Bartra scored his second goal for the Blaugrana, replacing an injured Mascherano in the first half of an eventual 4–1 success over against Real Sociedad at the Camp Nou, and netting from close range after a Lionel Messi individual effort.[9]
On 18 March 2014, Bartra signed a new three-year contract.[10]
International career
Bartra won 37 caps for Spain at youth level all categories comprised, including 16 for the under-21s. He made his debut for the full side on 16 November 2013, playing the entire 2–1 friendly win in Equatorial Guinea.[11] This game was latter annulled by FIFA as they had not been notified early enough that the referee would be from Equatorial Guinea,[12] and his first valid appearance took place on 8 September 2014 as he came on as a 68th-minute substitute for Sergio Ramos in a 5–1 home triumph against Macedonia for the UEFA Euro 2016 qualifiers.[13]
Personal life
Bartra's fraternal twin brother, Èric, also came through La Masia.[14] He started a relationship with Grand Prix motorcycle racing journalist Melissa Jiménez in February 2014, and welcomed daughter Gala on 18 August of the following year.[15]
