The "Mario Brothers Rap", (also known as the "Plumber Rap" in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!) is the theme song for The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! and a song in the soundtrack for the The Super Mario Bros. Movie.[1] The song is based on the original "Overworld" theme from the Super Mario Bros. video game.[2][3][4]
The opening theme featured 'Captain' Lou Albano (as Mario) and Danny Wells (as Luigi) rapping with Super Mario Bros. video game music and sound effects. An alternate version of the theme song played before each Super Mario Bros. cartoon on the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. The theme song for this version was comprised solely of clips from the cartoon. [5]
Concept and History
The song featured 'Captain' Lou Albano (as Mario) and Danny Wells (as Luigi) rapping with Super Mario Bros. video game instrumentals and sound effects. The opening for the show began with Albano and Wells in character dancing on a purple background with the show's logo, then changed to clips of the cartoon.[6][7]
The producers wanted a theme song for the Super Mario Bros. Super Show to be earworm and catchy. In a interview with Riba, he stated that "Of course now it’s horribly dated. But it was endearing to kids.[8] In a Super Bowl ad, the Modern version of the Mario Brothers Rap came with updated instrumental and higher quality vocals.[9][10][11] Although the commercial was supposed to be apart of Super Bowl, It came with the soundtrack of the flim and appeared in the movie as a commercial.[12][13]
The video for this opening theme song began with Albano and Wells in character dancing on a purple background with the show's logo, then changed to clips of the cartoon.
