Synopsis

Edward Livingstone makes a comeback to the college where he studied as a ruthless and strict professor and becomes a terror to the students.

Cast

Production

In late October 2016, scenarist Uday Krishna stated that his next screenplay, featuring Mammootty, would be directed by Ajai Vasudev, while brushing aside the misinterpretations that came after he and director Vaisakh met Mammootty at the sets of a Mammootty-starrer film few days before. Uday Krishna further explained about the project that it would be set at the backdrop of a college campus and Mammootty would appear as a lecturer, adding that the film would be an entertainer utilizing the superstar image of the actor.[5] The film was officially announced in February 2017 at a ceremony held in Dubai by producer C. H. Muhammed as his debut production venture. Along with the announcement, the production company 'Royal Cinemas' was also launched.[6] Initially by May 2017, reports suggested that the film was entitled as 'Eddy', with Mammootty's character name revealed to be Edward Livingstone.[7] In July 2017, title of the film was officially confirmed as Masterpiece, with a motion poster released by director Joshiy at an event held in Kochi, which also revealed the film's tagline 'Master of Masses'.[8]

The film marks the second venture of director Ajai Vasudev, who has made his debut in Rajadhi Raja (2014) with Mammootty himself being the lead. According to him, Masterpiece is prominently a thriller or, if a rather tagging is required, a suspense thriller having all the features of an Uday Krishna script, such as humor, fight, and other entertaining elements. About the plot, he said, "something happens in the college and that's what Masterpiece is all about."[9]

Casting

By February 2017, actors Mukesh, Salim Kumar, Maqbool Salmaan, John Kaipallil, Kalabhavan Shajohn, Arjun Nandhakumar and Kailash were confirmed to be in cast,[6] while Unni Mukundan was roped in by Ajai Vasudev to an important role, though he had not officially signed at that time. Mukesh was reported to appear in a role of vice principal at the college, while Unni Mukundan's character was confirmed to be not a student. Regarding the character of Mammootty, Ajai Vasudev said, "He plays a strict college professor who doesn't mollycoddle his students, a rough and tough character with a short temper. The characterisation is very much on the lines of the larger-than-life, mass roles that he has done previously."[10] Mammootty himself chose the style and appearance of his role, because in Ajai's word "he loved the character of Professor Eddy".[9]

In early April 2017, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar was confirmed to be cast as one of the female leads,[11] while Poonam Bajwa and Mahima Nambiar were later reported to be in other pivotal female roles.[12] Varalaxmi has previously starred opposite Mammootty in the 2016 film Kasaba, while Mahima Nambiar makes a comeback to Malayalam after Kaaryasthan (2010). According to Ajai Vasudev, "All three actresses have important roles in the film."[12] Uday Krishna revealed that Varalaxmi would play an IPS officer Bhavani Durga and Poonam Bajwa's character would be that of a lecturer.[13] However, none of the actresses is as a love interest for the hero, as the plot lacks such a thread.[9]

In the same month, Gokul Suresh, son of actor Suresh Gopi, was reported to be in the film in a prominent role.[3] He, Maqbool Salmaan and John Kaippallil were confirmed to appear in the roles of students.[13] Actor and indie film maker Santhosh Pandit himself confirmed his presence in the film as an actor, on his Facebook page on 18 April, inviting a massive reactions.[14] Pandit halted his then-ongoing directorial titled Urukku Satheesan for two months[14] and allotted a one month-long date for finishing his portions,[15] marking his debut in mainstream Malayalam cinema in a full-length role.[16] Actor Captain Raju and Mammootty starred together in Masterpiece after a years-long gap.[17]

Filming

The principal photography commenced on 17 April 2017.[3] Unni Mukundan announced through social media that he had joined with the team.[18] Set in Kollam city, film's first schedule was shot at the Fatima Mata National College. Mammootty's portions were started to film since 10 May.[19] It was reported that a 10 days of filming were allocated to shoot a single action sequence of Mammootty fighting against 30 fighters, choreographed by Anal Arasu.[20] The second schedule of shooting commenced in early July 2017 and was predominantly shot at a location in Calicut.[21][22] Mammootty rode a Harley-Davidson Street motorcycle for a scene that was shot on a day in late August.[23] Another fight sequence involving Mammootty was shot in Kochi, lasting three days, in November 2017. Then the team moved again to Kollam, where a five days of filming was planned, in its final schedule.[24] According to Ajai Vasudev, action sequences are the highlight of the movie, while he particularly applauded Mammootty who strove to perform it perfectly.[9]

Principal photography was packed up by the end of November in Kochi, with some crucial scenes in the movie shot there in final days.[25] Filiming took place in more than 100 days.[4]

Release

Release of the film was postponed several times. It was initially planned to release in September first week, during the time of Onam, which changed to September 28, then to November first week.[26] Finally, the release date was announced as 21 December 2017.[1]
