Mockhorn Island Wildlife Management Area
Appearance
Mockhorn Island Wildlife Management Area is a protected area located in Northampton County, Virginia. Its two tracts, totaling over 7,000 acres (28 km2) in size, cover tidal marshland on two barrier islands along the Atlantic coast of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Much of the island is submerged except at low tide; its major vegetation is cordgrass. The few hummocks that remain above water play host to Loblolly Pine, Eastern Redcedar, Southern Wax Myrtle, greenbriar, honeysuckle, and poison ivy. The focus of management on the area is conservation of its natural state, as the wind and water make most attempts at creating habitat difficult.
