Monte Vista High School is a comprehensive public high school located in Danville, California.[2] Monte Vista is a National Blue Ribbon school, as well as a California Distinguished School and fully WASC accredited. The school is located in the San Ramon Valley, approximately 35 miles east of San Francisco and is part of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District.[3] The school mascot is a Mustang. It serves around 2274 students from grades 9–12.[2] The principal is Kevin Ahern.[4] Its primary sports rival is San Ramon Valley High School.

Academics

The school is fully WASC accredited and offers college preparatory courses that are University of California A-G certified. In 2014, the school offered 23 Advanced Placement Courses and 7 Honors courses.[5] The school also offers courses through the California Association of Regional Occupational Centers and Programs.

Notable alumni

Sports

Monte Vista Mustangs compete in the East Bay Athletic League (EBAL) of the CIF North Coast Section (NCS). In 2014, the Monte Vista varsity boys basketball team, led by head coach Nick Jones, set numerous school records. After winning the EBAL and NCS titles, the Mustangs defeated Centennial High School (Corona, California) 66-55 to win the California Division 1 state championship. This was the first state championship in the school's history and the first state championship for a Contra Costa County, California public school since Northgate High School (Walnut Creek, California) won the Division III boys basketball state championship in 1995.[9] The 2013-2014 boys basketball team finished the season 32-1, and were ranked 9th in the nation and 2nd in the state of California, according to MaxPreps.[10]

Racial graffiti

On November 16, 2016, an African American student found graffiti in the boy's restroom which marked some stalls for "whites" and others for "colored".[11][12][13][14] Pictures of the graffiti quickly appeared on social media. The bathroom was immediately closed and the graffiti was removed. The incident prompted Danville police and the San Ramon Valley Unified School District to start an investigation to find the person or persons responsible. The school’s principal, Kevin Ahern, sent out an email the following morning informing parents about the incident and asking for anyone with information to come forward.[15] A school assembly was also called that day to discuss the incident. It was the third incident in two week of racial graffiti in schools in the San Ramon area.[16]
