Ukraine Village Recapture

[edit]

Should "Ukrainian forces recapture the village of Rivnopil in Donetsk Oblast, according to Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar" included in the portal? Carter00000 (talk) 05:27, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No. As per my previous edit summary, I believe that the news is not notable enough, given that the cited source itself said that nine similar events had occurred during the past one month period. Given the frequency of the events, I do not feel any single event is notable enough for the portal. Carter00000 (talk) 05:34, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, as it indicates Ukraine is retaking territory now that has been held since early 2022. --IJBall (contribstalk) 13:10, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, as notable territorial recaptures have always been included. This shouldn’t have been removed in the first place. The Kip (talk) 16:11, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Reply to IJBall & The Kip, I'm not disputing the idea that territory is being recaptured; this has undoubtedly been happening. Simply put, I am contesting what level of notability a "capture" should have/how large a territory should be, in order to qualify for inclusion in the portal. We cannot record every single change in territory because it is natural for land to be regularly gained or change hands during the course of a conflict.
For this entry, this sources notes [1] that this village is "the ninth recaptured by Ukraine this month". That's an average of one occurrence every three days, such frequency can only be considered routine. The article further notes that the village was "deserted and heavily damaged", so this was unlikely to have been a notable gain. No further information in the article states/notes that this was a capture of any significance.
Given the above, I simply don't see how this is a "notable" capture, rather then something which is a routine part of the conflict.
Considering where this village was recaptured, it is important enough to report here. Also, it's 2-to-1 in favor, so I am going to restore this, as there is clearly not consensus in favor of removal.... Note: I am not saying every village capture is relevant enough for 'Current Events' – but some of them will be, and this one is. --IJBall (contribstalk) 19:46, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see how the location for this specific village is special, compared to the other captures which I mentioned in my previous reply. I acknowledge your point that the captures were of territory held by Russia since 2022, but since it seems most of the territory recaptured falls under this category, I don't see how this specific village is notable. Carter00000 (talk) 01:22, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Rivnopil might not be a major town or city but given the context of the ongoing Ukrainian counter-offensive, and how contested the front line in Eastern Ukraine is right now, even a small village changing hands is significant. Also, it has international coverage and to me that signals notability. I don't see the issue with including it, especially since there's no other battlefield updates on this day's portal. GWA88 (talk) 21:38, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'd argue that given how contested the front line is right now, it actually makes each capture of territory less significant, given that a territory changing hands is likely to be much more frequent, making each capture less significant.
I also note that we're not obligated to provide battlefield updates on the conflict each day, if there is no significant information, we should simply not post anything. Carter00000 (talk) 01:23, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Great. That's your opinion. Three other editors now feel this news is significant enough to include. IOW, there is no consensus in favor of your removal (in fact, there is now rough consensus against removal). That's really all that matters here. --IJBall (contribstalk) 01:43, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Carter00000: Edit warring in favor of your preferred version is a really bad look on this. More than any other Wiki page, nobody own 'Current events'. --IJBall (contribstalk) 02:23, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've made attempts here to engage in meaningful discussion on the content dispute. I have not attempted to "own" any page. Carter00000 (talk) 02:33, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You asked for a discussion. Three other editors chimed in, and on a single day’s talk portal that’s about the best you can hope for. Those three editors all disagreed with your position, and yet you continue to remove the content in search of a “consensus” that doesn’t exist. You very much are attempting to “own” the page. The Kip (talk) 14:09, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@IJBall and The Kip:, Can something be done about Carter00000's blatant edit warring on the portal? This isn't the first time he's done it on issues related to the war in Ukraine. GWA88 (talk) 12:54, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@GWA88: Other editors needed to revert on this, which you have now done. User:Carter00000 is potentially over WP:3RR even right now (I count 4 reverts after the first removal, unless I have miscounted) – if they revert again, they have definitely violated 3RR, and can be taken to WP:ANEW. If there is a pattern of this, you'll want to gather the evidence, and add it to any ANEW report to show a history of edit warring. --IJBall (contribstalk) 13:01, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've left a warning on his talk page about it. His attempt at protecting the portal to essentially lock in his reverting was also declined by @Daniel Quinlan, who also pointed out that he was edit warring. GWA88 (talk) 13:07, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Reply to GWA88, IJBall, The Kip. First, I acknowledge the various warnings I have received. I have edit warred over this entry, and have passed 3RR, so could indeed be blocked over the violation. I will be more mindful of my actions in the future.
In the spirit of compromising, and to underline my above sentiments, I'd like to suggest the following. As I stated when I removed the entry, I do not feel that this entry is notable enough to be included. Given that we will keep this entry, I have added "...the ninth in the past month" to the end of the entry. I feel that this grouping will improve the overall notability of the entry, mitigating some of my concern. I hope you will accept this, but if you do not feel it is a improvement, feel free to revert it and I will not contest the revert. Carter00000 (talk) 15:17, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Biden Announcement

[edit]

Should "U.S. President Joe Biden addresses the short-lived rebellion that unfolded this weekend against Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying that the United States and its allies were in no way involved" included in the portal? Carter00000 (talk) 05:28, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No. As per my previous edit summary, I believe that the news is not notable enough, given that it is only rhetoric without any basis in actual information or reply to any statement. Carter00000 (talk) 05:36, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
