Richard Ludlow is an American video game audio director, sound designer, music producer, and voice director, best known for his work on King's Quest[1] and Arena of Valor. He is the founder and co-owner of Hexany Audio, a prominent video game audio production studio located in Los Angeles, California.[2]
Early life and influences
At the age of five, Ludlow began violin lessons, and later began to learn improvisational styles of music such as Celtic, jazz, and bluegrass. He then began to study musical composition which he preferred over performance. In middle school, he composed his first piece of music.
He attended Fountain Valley High School in Fountain Valley, California. During the summer before his senior year, he attended a five-week program at Berklee College of Music that included a presentation by a video game composer which he said inspired him to pick up video games "because it's so creative and interactive." That academic year, he received a scholarship to Berklee College of Music where he studied dual majors in electronic production and design (EPD) and film scoring, in addition to minors in acoustics and electronics, audio design for video games, and video game scoring.[3] He participated in five internships (including one with composer Lucas Vidal), received five scholarships, including the Video Game Scoring Award and the Wendy Carlos Sound Design Award, and co-founded the school's Sound Design Network. During his final years at Berklee, Ludlow began completing contract work for mobile apps and games in order to generate income and build professional experience. He soon had opportunities to work on larger projects he was unable to complete alone but didn’t want to pass off to other people. Citing that he "wanted to keep it within the family", Ludlow subsequently founded Hexany Audio in 2012 with three friends from Berklee. He graduated in 2014.[4][5]
Career
Ludlow is the co-owner and audio director at Hexany Audio. Upon his graduating college, Hexany Audio expanded to include a larger team of sound designers and composers, including Matthew Carl Earl (co-owner), Jason Walsh, Nick Tomassetti, Justin Hollis, Kellen Fenton, and Vinicius Barbosa.[6][7] It relocated its headquarters to Los Angeles, California[8] and has completed both mainstream and independent projects for video games, virtual reality, augmented reality, theme parks, and interactive experiences in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Germany, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, China, and Canada.[9][10][11] Hexany Audio has also contributed to Amazon Alexa.[12]
Ludlow has served as the audio director, audio producer, and sound lead on multiple video games for the company, including King's Quest, Into the Stars, Assassin's Creed Syndicate trailer, Blade Runner Revelations (VR), and Moonlight Blade.[13] He has also served as audio director and audio producer on multiple film and television projects, including The Cold Light of Day, The Raven, and projects for Fortune 500 brands such as Disney, Coca-Cola, Activision, and Nike.[14]
In 2016, he appeared in the documentary Beep: A Documentary History of Game Sound.[15]
Ludlow speaks frequently at panels and conventions on the topic of audio and music for video games. He has presented talks on audio for video games at GDC, GDC Europe, GDC Next, GameSoundCon, PAX East, PAX Dev, IndieCade, Gamescom, Casual Connect, the External Development Summit, the Midwest Game Developers Summit, Sigma Play, the Silicon Valley Virtual Reality Expo, MIT, WonderCon, and Berklee College of Music.[16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23]
In 2017, he served as audio producer for the highly anticipated North American release of Arena of Valor.[24]
