Biography

Faena studied literature and music at Columbia University for two years before leaving to pursue his first feature film, La Mujer Rota—released to both controversy and acclaim in his native Buenos Aires in the fall of 2007.[1][2][3] La Mujer Rota was shown at the 2013 Monterrey Film Festival in Monterrey, Mexico.[4] In 2008, he made his editorial debut with a twenty-page story in V Magazine.

Faena photographed 6 portrait covers (styled by Miuccia Prada) with models styled as "Hot Nuns" and an editorial for Pop Magazine's fall 2008 issue in collaboration with Katie Grand.[5] The editorial for that issue, "Nun Head" was controversial because it showed models portrayed as nuns being nude and having lesbian sexual affairs.[6]

Faena photographed Ashley Olsen for the Summer 2009 issue of V Man.[7] Faena photographed Lady Gaga for the Summer 2009 issue of V Magazine.[8][9]

In 2010, Faena photographed the editorial "Footballers Wives", based on the Argentine trend of "botineras", tabloid coverage of football players and their wives, for V Magazine 66 with fashion editor Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele.[10][11] Faena photographed the three covers and cover editorial of the Youthquake Issue of V magazine.[12] One cover featured Sky Ferreira, Grimes, and Charli XCX.[12] Faena photographed Celine Dion for V Magazine 79, styled by Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele.[13][14]

In 2012, Faena photographed Valeria Lukyanova, the "living barbie" for V magazine.[15]

In 2013, Faena photographed "Nadia", a tribute to gymnast Nadia Comaneci with Carine Roitfeld for CR Fashion Book.[16] Faena photographed "Animal Nursery", Carine Roitfeld's second editorial as worldwide director of Harper's Bazaar, depicting models (including Irina Shayk and Kate Upton) caring for baby animals.[17] The editorial appeared in 26 versions of the magazine, and from this editorial appeared on the covers of six versions.[17][17] Faena has shot multiple covers and editorials for Vogue Turkey, including the May 2013 cover and cover story with Milla Jovovich.[18] Faena photographed Cindy Crawford in menswear for V Magazine's Winter 2013 issue.[19][20]

He also photographed editorials for Vogue Japan.[21] He has photographed campaigns for DVF by Diane von Furstenberg (the Fall/Winter 2013 campaign featuring Daria Werbowy),[22] BCBG Max Azria, Blumarine, Georg Jensen, Lord & Taylor, Mavi Jeans and Sam Edelman.[citation needed]

He lives and works in New York City.
