Shah Abdul Hannan (Bengali: শাহ আবদুল হান্নান) is a Bangladeshi Islamic philosopher, writer, economist, educator and media personality. He is the former Deputy Governor of the Bangladesh Bank (Central Bank of Bangladesh) and chairman of the National Board of Revenue. He is the founder of Darul Ihsan University, co-founder of North South University, Chairman of Islamic Economics Research Bureau. He was the Director of Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd also.[1][2]

Early life

Shah Abdul Hannan was born in 1939 Mymensingh, Bangladesh. He completed Bachelor of Economics and Political Science in 1959 and Master of Political Science in 1961 from University of Dhaka. He positioned 2nd and 1st in the exams respectively.[1] From the beginning of his life he was an observant and pious Muslim. He took part in most of the important student activisms for Islamic cause. After successfully completing studentship he joined the then Pakistan Civil Service.

Career

Government officer

Shah Abdul Hannan started his professional life as a Lecturer of Political Science in a College in Dhaka. He joined Pakistan Finance Service in 1963 and retired as the Secretary of the Govt. of Bangladesh in 1998.[3] He served the Government of Bangladesh as:

  • Chairman, National Board of Revenue
  • Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Bangladesh (Bangladesh Bank)
  • Director General, Bureau of Anti-corruption
  • Member, National Board of Revenue and Chairman, Value Added Tax cell (responsible for introduction of VAT)
  • Secretary, Ministry of Social Welfare,e)Secretary, Banking Division, Ministry of Finance
  • Secretary, Internal Resources Division, Ministry of Finance

Educator

Hannan is one of the founding members of the North South University,[4] Asian University of Bangladesh and Darul Ihsan University. He also served as the Chairman of the Institute of Research and Development (IRD), International Islamic University, Chittagong and syndicate member of Manarat International University.[5]

He is particularly popular among the urban youth in Dhaka for his semi-formal classes on various topics of Islam. He has lectured for YouTube videos' and indoor classes on a wide range of issues including women's rights, human rights, contemporary issues and Islamic solutions, Usul al fiqh,[6] Islamic Economics etc.[7]

As an economist Shah Abdul Hannan served as:

  • Chief Advisor, Islamic Insurance Co. Bangladesh

  • Founder member, Central Shariah Board of Islamic Banks
  • Chairman of Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd[8]

Social work

  • Founder, IBN SINA Trust, (health care and social welfare)
  • Member, Association of Correction and Social Reclamation, Bangladesh (ACSRB)

Media personality

Shah Hannan regularly attends in media programs in channels NTV, ATN Bangla, RTV, Islamic TV etc.
