Spectrum of the Seas is a Template:Sclass- owned by Royal Caribbean International (RCI) and the first ship of the modified Quantum-class of cruise ships. The Quantum class is the third largest class of cruise ships in the world, behind MSC Cruises's Meraviglia-class and Royal Caribbean International's Template:Sclass- by gross tonnage.

History

Planning

On May 7, 2015, Royal Caribbean released an announcement regarding an agreement entered with Meyer Werft about ordering the fourth Quantum-class ship, with a scheduled entry into service of 2019.[3] The name of Royal Caribbean's first Quantum Ultra cruise ship was announced as the Spectrum of the Seas on August 16, 2017.[4] On the same day, Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean, confirmed an announcement made earlier in April 2017 that the ship would be based in the Chinese market and would feature accommodations and offerings specifically designed for the Asia-Pacific region.[5][4][6]

Construction timeline

The steel cutting ceremony was performed on August 16, 2017[4] and the keel laying ceremony was performed on November 8, 2017.[7] A coin ceremony was also dedicated on the same day, featuring a coin placed under the first block out of the 74 total blocks comprising the vessel.[7] Spectrum of the Seas floated out from Meyer Werft's shipyard in Papenburg on February 25, 2019, ready to have its funnel cladding installed at the shipyard's outfitting pier.[8] The ship's conveyance up the river Ems for its sea trials in the North Sea began on March 20, 2019 and finished the next day as it arrived in Eemshaven.[9]

Delivery and christening

Spectrum of the Seas was officially delivered to Royal Caribbean on April 11, 2019 in a ceremony in Bremerhaven.[10] On June 3, 2019, Huang Xiaoming and Angelababy christened the vessel in a ceremony celebrating the ship's arrival in China.[11]

Service history

On April 18, 2019, Spectrum of the Seas departed on her maiden voyage from Barcelona to Singapore, with two short sailings thereafter before arriving in Shanghai.[12] On the evening of June 3, 2019, following its christening, the ship set sail on her inaugural sailing after its Chinese debut for a three-day cruise around Shanghai.[11] Since then, Spectrum of the Seas has been homeported in Shanghai and will cruise between Shanghai and various ports in East Asia year-round.[12]
