Stuart Dew (born 18 August 1979) is a former Australian rules footballer and dual premiership-player for Port Adelaide and Hawthorn in the Australian Football League. Dew was a student at Enfield High School prior to his AFL career.

Dew was most recognised for his "raking" (as described by many commentators) left-foot kicks, which would often reach over 50 metres. The runs generated by Dew often lead to many goals from outside the 50-metre arc.

AFL career

Port Adelaide career (1997–2006)

He debuted with the Port Adelaide Football Club in 1997, their inaugural year in the AFL, but it wasn't until the 1998 season that he received regular selection. He was occasionally criticised for his lack of dedication on the training track; however as he matured, Dew became an important player for the Power as evidenced during the 2004 season when he booted 31 goals and was a part of the club's premiership. The 2005 season saw Dew play a running half-back role and played in all 24 games for Port. He complemented Port recruit Nathan Lonie, in that they played similar roles. On 6 November 2006, Dew announced his retirement from the AFL.[1]

Hawthorn career (2008–2009)

Despite not playing football at any level during 2007, Dew announced his intentions to come out of retirement to pursue an AFL career again. He nominated himself for the 2007 AFL National Draft and was selected by Hawthorn with its third round selection (#45 overall). He debuted for Hawthorn against Melbourne in round 1 2008, and injured his hamstring in his second match against Fremantle. He missed some games later in the year by injuring his hamstring again but was fit and playing good footy by the time of the finals. Stuart repaid the faith shown in him with a brilliant burst in the Grand Final when the result was still in the balance in the third quarter, kicking two goals and setting up two others. A series of soft tissues injuries restricted Dew to 11 games in 2009 and he announced that he will retire from AFL at the end of the 2009 season.[2]

Sydney Swans (2010–)

In 2010, Dew joined the Sydney Swans as an assistant coach.

Famous Goals

Dew is known for his ability to score goals from outside 50 but one of his most memorable goals came at AAMI Stadium against Hawthorn in 2005. He kicked a goal by shrugging two tackles and kicking a goal on the hard side of AAMI stadium's forward line, earning a Goal Of The Year nomination.

His two goals in the third quarter of the 2008 AFL Grand Final were widely proclaimed as the best five minutes of his footballing life.
