Burundi is divided into 17 provinces,[1] 117 communes,[2] and 2,638 collines (hills).[3] Provincial governments are structured upon these boundaries. In 2000, the province encompassing Bujumbura was separated into two provinces, Bujumbura Rural and Bunjumbura Mairie.[4]

There are reports of 43 districts [5] or health districts.[6]
