The Sydney Theatre Company (STC) is one of Australia's best-known theatre companies operating from The Wharf Theatre at Dawes Point near The Rocks area of Sydney, as well as the Sydney Theatre and the Sydney Opera House Drama Theatre.

The Sydney Theatre Company was formed by a grant from the New South Wales State Government in 1979, with Richard Wherrett as artistic director and productions followed the year after.

The Wharf Theatre opened in 1984 and has produced notable international and local plays, such as works by David Williamson. The company also uses the Sydney Theatre nearby, and the Drama Theatre in the Sydney Opera House.

Many Australian actors who would later find wider success both locally and internationally such as Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush and Toni Collette have grounded their careers in Sydney Theatre Company productions.

Old Tote Theatre Company

NIDA considers that its standing company, the Old Tote Theatre Company (1963-1978), was the precursor to the Sydney Theatre Company.

Artistic directors

Wayne Harrison became artistic director in 1990, followed by Robyn Nevin A.M.. In 2009, Cate Blanchett and her husband, playwright Andrew Upton took command of the company. Directors working regularly for STC include Gale Edwards, Barrie Kosky, David Berthold, Neil Armfield and Benedict Andrews.

Greening the Wharf

The Sydney Theatre Company operates in a heritage site of the wharf area of Sydney Harbour. Under the leadership of Blanchett and Upton, it initiated a comprehensive large scale environmental program called Greening the Wharf, investing in solar energy, rainwater harvesting, energy efficiency measures and best practice waste management. The program goes beyond infrastructure projects to include employees, environmentally responsible theatre production, community engagement and education.[1] The program won two Green Globe Awards[2]
