GA Re-Review and In-line citations[edit]

Members of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles are in the process of doing a re-review of current Good Article listings to ensure compliance with the standards of the Good Article Criteria. Terminologia[edit]

Nel Palio è in uso da tempo immemorabile una terminologia specifica per definire i diversi protagonisti o momenti della corsa.

Alfiere: lo sbandieratore di una contrada;
Bandierino: il punto d'arrivo della carriera;
Barbaresco: il contradaiolo addetto alla cura del cavallo;
Barbero: il cavallo da corsa, ma anche le tradizionali biglie di legno colorate con le insegne delle contrade, caratteristico gioco senese;
Bombolone: cavallo molto forte;
Brenna: cavallo considerato scarso;
Canapi: indica le grosse funi che delimitano la zona della mossa, ma anche il periodo di attesa della partenza della corsa, proverbialmente piuttosto lungo e carico di tensione (stare "fra i canapi");
Capitano: il contradaiolo che, durante il periodo del Palio, è plenipotenziario della gestione della contrada;
Cappotto: quando una contrada riesce a vincere, nello stesso anno, entrambi i Palii (l'ultimo nel 1997 da parte della Giraffa);
Carriera: la corsa;
Carroccio: il carro tirato da buoi che durante il corteo storico trasporta il palio;
Cencio: il palio (il drappo che viene assegnato al vincitore);
Comparse: i rappresentanti in costume di una contrada che partecipano al corteo storico;
Cuffia: il simbolo metaforico della contrada nonna;
Drappellone: il palio (il drappo che viene assegnato al vincitore);
Duce: figura rievocata nel corteo storico, rappresenta il comandante delle compagnie militari delle antiche contrade medioevali. Attualmente è solo una figura rappresentativa, senza alcun potere;
Mangino: il braccio destro del Capitano di contrada, che, assieme a questo organizza i partiti per la contrada durante il palio;
Masgalano: piatto in metallo prezioso che viene assegnato alla contrada che abbia effettuato la migliore figura nel corteo storico. In pratica consiste in un premio agli alfieri più abili;
Montura: indica gli abiti, ispirati all'epoca rinascimentale, utilizzati della comparse delle diverse contrade durante il corteo storico che precede la corsa;
Mossa: indica l'inizio della corsa vera e propria, ma anche il punto della piazza da dove la corsa parte;
Mossiere: il personaggio designato a regolamentare la partenza (mossa) della corsa;
Nerbata: l'utilizzo del nerbo contro un fantino avversario;
Nerbo: il tendine essiccato di bue utilizzato dai fantini quale frusta;
Nonna: la contrada che non vince il palio da più tempo (attualmente la Civetta, che non vince dal 1979);
Palio: il termine può essere utilizzato per indicare la corsa dei cavalli, ma anche il drappo assegnato al vincitore della corsa;
Partiti: gli accordi, più o meno segreti, fra le diverse contrade per la vittoria del Palio;
Passeggiata: il corteo storico;
Priore: in quasi tutte le contrade, con questo titolo è designato il contradaiolo eletto a capo della contrada per tutto l'anno (periodo del Palio escluso). Nel Bruco si chiama Rettore mentre nell'Oca è detto Governatore;
Rincorsa: la posizione di partenza del decimo cavallo, situato al di fuori dello spazio delimitato dai canapi. Poiché è proprio l'entrata del decimo cavallo nei canapi a determinare la partenza della corsa, questa posizione è considerata particolarmente favorevole, sia per la vittoria, sia per, eventualmente, favorire (o sfavorire) un'altra contrada;
Scosso: il cavallo che ha disarcionato il fantino;
Soprallasso: il cavallo, di scarso valore, che il fantino monta durante il corteo storico;
Spennacchiera: indica la coccarda coi colori della contrada di appartenenza, applicata sulla fronte del cavallo;
Steccato: le barriere di legno che delimitano internamente la pista. La posizione di partenza "allo steccato" indica le posizioni più interne, considerate comunemente fra le più favorevoli per la vittoria della corsa;
Tratta: la scelta e l'assegnazione alle contrade (per estrazione) dei cavalli per la corsa; ha luogo il 29 giugno per il Palio di Provenzano e il 13 agosto per quello dell'Assunta;
Verrocchio: palco situato appena sopra la zona della mossa, da dove il mossiere gestisce le operazioni relative alla partenza.

This is a fascinating subject and so far it missed something of the obvious passion involved. I believe someone good with Italian could produce an excellent mirror of the Italian Wiki page.

Confusing/contradictory information[edit]

Under the heading "History", and the sub-heading "A second Palio in August", there appears to be contradictory information. Near the beginning of the paragraph it states,"A second, on August 16, was added from 1701, though initially, the August race was run intermittently rather than every year." But the last sentence under that sub-heading states, "It was originated in 1581 on August 15." This sentence, standing on its own as it does, seems incomplete and unclear, even if it didn't contain seemingly contradictory information. That aside, it also contradicts a statement in the earlier sub-heading "Origins", which states "The first modern Palio (called palio alla tonda to distinguish it from the earlier (palii alla lunga) took place in 1656." So, does this mean that the "it" that "originated in 1581 on August 15" was a Palio alla lunga? That would also contradict information earlier in the article. Some clarification/correction of these dates would greatly improve this section.BlancheD (talk) 19:53, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge with Corteo Storico[edit]

Corteo Storico has no footnotes, so it's impossible to tell what is and what is not in the source cited, Terra in piazza. Unless someone has a copy of that book (I don't) and wants to add inline references to that page to our current standards, I suggest merging it here.
