The 103rd meridian is the western boundary of the Oklahoma panhandle but it is not the western boundary of the Texas panhandle. If you will notice on a U.S. map that the western Oklahoma panhandle boundary is the 103rd meridian but the western boundary of the Texas panhandle is roughly three to three and a half miles west of the 103rd meridian. The reason being that this boundary was incorrectly marked. This meant that various Texas ranches had acreage west of the meridian. Congress was made aware of this when New Mexico statehood was being discussed. New Mexico accepted the boundary west of the 103rd meridian as a prerequisite to entering the Union. Congress thereby accepted this new boundary and approved establishment of the State of New Mexico. Sclm046 04:27, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
