Disputed: AirTouch Communications was not spun off from US West. It was spun-off from Pacific Telesis on April 1, 1994. It merged with US West New Vector Group some time in the mid '90s. AirTouch Communications merged with Vodafone on June 30, 1999 [1] to create Vodafone AirTouch. Vodafone then contributed the US cellular assets (formerly AirTouch Cellular) into a merger with Verizon to create Verizon Wireless. Also, AirTouch did not move from Denver to San Francisco. It was already established in San Francisco when it was spun off from Pacific Telesis. ABC1357 07:40, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Some additional info

[edit]

AirTouch Communications was formed when Pacific Telesis spun off PacTel Cellular in 1994.

In July 1994, AirTouch Communications and US West formed a joint venture to eventually merge their cellular operations.

In May 1996 US West NewVector rebranded US West Cellular as AirTouch Cellular. [2]

In April 1997 AirTouch tried to buy US West NewVector but missed the Morris Trust filing deadline by 1 day. [3]

In Feb. 1998, AirTouch Communications bought US West NewVector from US West Media for $5.7 billion. This made AirTouch the second largest wireless company in the US. [4]

In January 1999, Vodafone bid $62 billion for AirTouch. [5]

In September 1999, Bell Atlantic, GTE and Vodafone Airtouch agreed to merge their wireless operations to form Verizon Wireless.[6]

The creation of the Verizon Wireless brand marked the end of the AirTouch brand.

The company Waxess USA reincorporated as AirTouch Communications, Inc. in July 2011. The Company is now publicly listed on the OTC under the ticker symbol ATCH, and produces a different product than the brand ended with the creation of Verizon. Aside from the name, logo, and telecommunications industry focus, the new company shares nothing in common with the original. Would editing of this page to reflect the recent change in status of the name be a better option than including a reference and link to the new company and then creating a new page for the new company?

I was there

[edit]
  • Correct AirTouch Communications was not spun off from US West. AirTouch effectively bought US West Cellular (New Vector)
  • By the time it got to us Pacific Telesis had merged with other companies including if I remember correctly Southwestern_Bell and morphed it in to AirTouch.
  • It did not seem to many people at USWNVG saw that it was a merger as it was more of a 80/20 split with AirTouch being the 80, so in effect it was really a purchace. They called a merger to be nice.
  • Correct AirTouch did not move from Denver to San Francisco. Actually they moved portions of the operations piecemeal to Walnut Creek and San Francisco.
  • I will try to fix what I can remember.
