Headed Off At The Pass

I was just editing the page in part to eliminate that meaningless "following the sun" slogan. I also hoped to reduce the PR-driven weaselwords and the number of quotes, and to reorganize so that that the content actually relates to the headers that precede them. When I tried to save my changes, I encountered an edit conflict. Apparently, somebody's really committed to "following the sun." I'm new at this and not really prepared to deal with an edit conflict, so I surrender. But this page needs serious work, especially with the weaselwords and the organization. 6/27/09; 1:48 p.m. EST. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Crovitzite (talkcontribs) Crovitzite (talk) 18:15, 27 June 2009 (UTC)Crovitzite, 17:51, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

Following the sun?

In the end of the opening paragraph, what the heck does that mean? It doesn't follow the Earths rotation if it goes from Dora to Malaysia to London to Washington DC.

I was thinking the same thing. The live news broadcasts do "follow the sun" in a typical day, but you are right that they are not written in that order on the page. I may go ahead and put Kuala Lumpur before Doha. --Char645 (talk) 06:41, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Watching Al Jazeera English

Why don't they put up a high speed webcast so those of us in Jewish controlled countries can see it? 68.1.186.191

Why don't they send us free pizza via email, so those of us in Illuminati controlled countries can eat without having to take off our tin foil hats to signal our hunger to the world controllers? 127.0.0.1

yes there should be instead of a broken one. 207.58.130.206

If there really still are any broken links, please specify here exactly what doesn't work, and where (what country) you are trying to access the link from.

Someone should get the Real Player superpass and post the link here. 208.53.138.211

That won't work. These streams work via the rtsp protocol, and a new rtsp:// URL is generated every time you're trying to view a subscription stream. A newly generated rtsp URL can only be used once, after which it becomes invalid. In order to get a valid rtsp URL you need to sign in with your realplayer subscription password -- signing in will get you some sort of cookie so you don't have to sign in again in order to get a new rtsp URL on subsequent Realplayer launches. Suffice to say that only one cookie per subscription will be valid, so if you're paying for one subscription, you really can watch the stream on just one computer at a time. The free low quality stream is another matter. It always generates the same rtsp URL. It is also possible to avoid the timeout on the free stream if you know how to use vi or similar. So you've got every option to properly familiarize yourself with the channel, but if you really end up watching it you really should subscribe. Don't be a freeloader.

The link does work as of this date. --Kf4bdy talk contribs 09:13, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

No it did not. 208.53.138.211

Again, if there really still are any broken links, please specify here exactly what doesn't work, and where (what country) you are trying to access the link from.

REAL Video Availability

The Al Jazeera English on Real 56K Video is only available in selected areas, excluding Philippines, etc...

Could people pls confirm which areas the online video streams are and are not available in?
I can confirm that the Real streams (free/subscription) are available in the EU.

"one of the three biggest global English language 24 hour news channels"

What does "The channel is now one of the three biggest global English language 24 hour news channels, the other two being BBC World and CNN International" really mean? That it's now theoretically available to a number of customers which is only behind BBC and CNN (if these individuals chose to actually view it, which most of them currently don't)? That's not what most people would call being "one of the three biggest"... AnonMoos 03:33, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

I have to say that I'm quite sure that a substantial portion of those people who have either the BBC or CNN channels available to them do not actually view the programming, though I agree that the specific criteria used in determining the channel's 'stature' ought to be included if it is going to be grouped with the other two channels. But seriously...what criteria do you suggest we use for determining who the 'biggest' channels are? And whose data should we rely on? Self-reported or 3rd party? -Grammaticus Repairo 07:01, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

The number of people the channel is "now theoretically available to" is closer to 6.5 billion than 80 million. See here. Satellite signal offer not available in Hawaii, Alaska, Antarctica, Greenland and parts of the Far Eastern Federal District. Fees may apply. Void where prohibited by law. And here are some additional facts:

  • Al Jazeera (Arabic) is the most widely viewed and trusted news source in the Middle East.
  • There are about 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide.
  • There are about 354 million first, and 150 million–1.5 billion second language English speakers worldwide.

Al Jazeera English may be underrepresented in the USA, but 80 million worldwide sounds plausible to me. If you can prove that Al Jazeera English viewers are not really watching but CNN and BBC viewers really are watching, go ahead.

For the record, the initially used logo was Image:Aljazeerainternational.gif. It had been added by User:MEA707. When that logo was added, the channel was still expected to get named Al Jazeera International (the change to the actual name Al Jazeera English was done one day prior to launch).
Later, User:Sohailstyle changed that logo to Image:logo_aljazeera.jpg (a stylised version of the Arabic Al Jazeera logo without any English words).
Subsequent to that, Eve215454 changed the Image:logo_aljazeera.jpg logo to a screenshot logo (Image:Logo_aljazeeraenglish.PNG) which includes both the sylised Arabic Al Jazeera logo and the English word "ALJAZEERA", exactly as broadcast by Al Jazeera English. Eve215454 then added this comment:

Although AJE has the same logo with the Al Jazeera Arabic, AJE's Logo has the "Al Jazeera" word below the corporate logo. I have changed the logo, it came from a TV Screenshot.
Eve215454 11:10, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

Some time later, User:70.225.184.51, changed the logo back to Image:Aljazeerainternational.gif‎. This prompted another user to write this:

Please Revert the logo to its Earlier Version, the Official name of the channel is AL JAZEERA English, not AL JAZEERA INTERNATIONAL. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Eve215454 (talkcontribs) 11:40, 1 January 2007 (UTC).

In response to the above, I have now changed the logo back to Image:Logo_aljazeeraenglish.PNG. 86.56.48.12 19:47, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

I've uploaded the newhour ident. However due to the long list of services on which AJE is available it is not in the best place in the article (programmes). What do people think of this?

reverted edits

User:Harry Stanley's edits have been reverted by User:69.179.3.251 for good reason:

  • AJE is not known as JSC. Al Jazeera may have used the JSC nomer in the past, but AJE never has.
  • Apart from a slew of Middle Eastern advertisers, AJE has carried ads for Shell, Sony, Nokia, Casino Royale/Omega, Tissot & others.
  • AFAIK Al Manaar is Arabic, not English.

High-definition TV?

I've been looking for some time now, but there isn't a single HD DVB-S or DVB-S2 broadcast of Al Jazeera English available in the EU. Even sites like KingOfSat's HDTV channels page doesn't list it. Therefor, I think the HD-claim is false. Can someone confirm this? 194.109.22.147 17:06, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

The high-definition television claim was very widely reported throughout the press. ;-) Just fucking google it :-) and you should be spoilt for choice for a source. I don't have HDTV, and I haven't a clue why you can't get ahold of a HDTV signal, but my theory would be that while Al Jazeera English is working entirely in HDTV, most of their distributors possibly may not be ready yet to send that HDTV goodness your way. If you're a really eager beaver you could of course email the kingofsat.net people or contact Al Jazeera English (the distribution.int email address is what I would pick) and try to get a reply straight from the horse's mouth. :) Lyngsat also has contact and satellite details.
PS: If you find out good info, it would be cool if you could contribute that to the Availability section. :)
86.56.48.12 23:36, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
I think that this channel is really is in HD, but it just depends on the satellite providers... This video shows their sets, technology...
Eve215454 13:33, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for telling me to justfuckinggoogleit, but I'm already aware of the claim Al Jazeera English made. The problem is that the claim doesn't hold up. Looking to the Lyngsat HD-page, none of the satellites' pages listed (yes, even those broadcasting outside the EU) make mention of Al Jazeera or Al Jazeera English. It can very well be that they use HD-hardware in-house (as do many other oranizations, like the BBC, National Geographic and German broadcasters), they do not broadcast that signal. That's the reason I feel that Al Jazeera English is not "... the first global high-definition television network", as mentioned in the top of the article. I'm just trying to help with the facts, nothing more, nothing less. 194.109.22.149 08:59, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
Hey, no offense, right? :)
There obviously are two options: Either these 3rd party webpages haven't updated their info yet (AJE is still fairly new), or there indeed is no HDTV signal available anywhere. In either case, it seems to me that this one again runs down to calling up or emailing Al Jazeera themselves. Only they can give you a really authoritative answer to your question. When I referenced the HDTV claims in my contributions to the article, I relied on the assumption that all these major media organisations who reported that claim had done their homework, and unless proven otherwise that's still my assumption because there's no dearth of sources and if I were to discount all sources of equal or less caliber than, say, the International Herald Tribune, etc. etc. then I'd have to discount probably around 95% of sources given in all Wikipedia articles. If you want to dig deeper, the onus really is on you prove oherwise. To that end it's probably best to just phone Al Jazeera and see what they say. I'm not Al Jazeera (much as I'd probably like working for them). The 3rd party websites and sources are not Al Jazeera. It looks like only Al Jazeera can give you you a definite answer as to where you can get a HDTV signal, or if you can't, what they base their HDTV claim on. Good luck, and please contribute back what you find out, preferably with sources. :)
86.56.48.12 11:46, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
KingOfSat and Lyngsat are right on the mark in all occasions I've encountered. Apart from that, Al Jazeera English states on which satellites they broadcast. The mentioned transponders do not carry HD-channels. After scanning the transponders mentioned under "European Coverage", it is clear they are all DVB-S carrying a standard 4:2:0 PAL signal, not HD. 194.109.22.148 16:55, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
I think your edit to the article was probably a good compromise and probably born out by the sources/facts we currently have.
However, I have a bit of additional info:
I have taken out the $6 USD Realplayer susbscription and with it, I have two streams available to chose from: a 320 kbps stream (which to me looks like regular TV quality) and a 500 kbps stream (which presumably looks better but which I can't watch because my PC is too underpowered for that). Again, I don't really have a clue about HDTV, but would the 500 kbps stream be considered HDTV? Does anyone know what quality the other online streaming providers (VDC/JumpTV) offer and whether they're HDTV?

bureaux

Is 'bureaux' the correct plural of 'bureau'? I always thought it was 'bureaus'. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 74.133.6.162 (talk) 18:43, 7 January 2007 (UTC).

'Bureaux' is correct. However, 'bureaus' is also correct. Both forms are in popular use. (Google currently returns 1,130,000 hits for an English-language only search of "bureaux" and 1,190,000 hits for an English-language only search of "bureaus" (but Google doesn't really seem to distinguish between both forms).)
The "bureaux" plural form entered the English lexicon from/via the French language and I guess by using it you're being a card-carrying traditionalist. I have an unconfirmed hunch that "bureaus" is more common in the US and "bureaux" is more common in the rest of the English speaking world. I like "bureaux" better, and since the article uses British English, I reckon it's nicer to leave it at "bureaux". (Remember, in the Eternal Wikipedia War between the American and English languages®™, the truce was to keep articles in the language they were started in and/or what's most commonly used in that article.)
86.56.48.12 23:01, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
the proper spelling in French is "bureaux". 157.150.192.237 (talk) 21:29, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
That's fair enough, but not relevant on the English Wikipedia. It is relevant though, that this very same spelling is also correct in English. ;) 86.56.40.172 (talk) 13:01, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Triangle TV - programmes or channels?

202.27.193.36 wrote:

"In New Zealand, Triangle TV re-broadcasts various Al Jazeera programmes in Auckland and Wellington on free to air UHF channels."

Do Triangle TV really rebroadcast various programmes (as in "segment of programming", eg. selected shows, news bulletins, etc.) or do they rebroadcast one or more of the Al Jazeera network's eight TV channels?

If they rebroadcast shows: which ones?

If they rebroadcast TV channels, which ones? (This article is about Al Jazeera English, not about any of the other Al Jazeera channels.)

Also, is the rebroadcasting done live (e.g. retransmission of the live signal), or is it actual rebroadcasting of content at a later date?

Any help much appreciated. :)

I'm also not too happy with this edit. I will admit it is not inaccurate, but it just seems a little bit too fawning. I don't know what grounds to remove it under though. Let others be the judge. 86.56.48.12 13:03, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Recently, new pictures are placed in subsections of the article, which are great but they distort the text layout. IMO, it's better to group the pictures in a gallery, placed below the "Trivia" section. This is the code I propose for the gallery:

<gallery widths=150px>
Image:Aljazeera London 01.jpg|Al Jazeera English [[Television studio|studio control room]] in [[London]].
Image:Al Jazeera mews room under construction by ashour jsc.jpg|Al Jazeera news room studio floor under construction.

Image:TIME ME Nov6.jpg|Al Jazeera English's Doha news studio featured on the cover of TIME magazine, November 6, 2006.
</gallery>

Some descriptions are modified. I drop one of the pictures (Image:Aljazeera London 03.jpg) from the gallery as I think it's not really suitable. Opinions are welcomed. Hytar (talk) 19:48, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

Supa Mandiwanzira

I have deleted Supa, as he has now been fired, although I think there is a necessity to cover this in the article, as his firing is very contraversial, and led to Al Jazeera finally being banned from Zimbabwe. —Preceding unsigned comment added by HandGrenadePins (talkcontribs) 15:17, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Owned by the Qatar Gov?

Al Jazeera is not owned by the government of Qatar it is funded by the government. Which make the first paragraph at the top of the page incorrect.

Al Jazeera is actually owned by the Emir/King/Whatever of Qatar. Coincidentally, he also has centralized control over the government. So really, it's the same. However, AJ is almost exclusively funded by the Emir. Wikifan12345 (talk) 13:56, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Quotation section should be removed for obvious pandering

That section was obviously written by people seeking to promote Al Jazeera English for commerical or cultural reasons, rather than for the expansion of knowledge (in my culture we call this a circle jerk). Much more detailed articles on BBC, Fox News Channel, and CNN contain nothing like this section, because of it's biased nature.

If no one objects, I'll remove it the next time I check this article.

Thanks, M4bwav (talk) 19:23, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

Because more along the lines of stating the network's mission statement, rather than an attempt by the article to pass something off as fact, I don't really see a problem with it. That said, I'v changed the wording to make that intention more clear. I also trimmed the quote to the one sentence the source uses to describe the network's aim.—DMCer 21:53, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
I think that you did a nice job trimming it down, but I hope I don't anger you when I say that it really should be removed. It just doesn't fit an article about a news organization, maybe if we were talking about subject matter where quotations were particularly important, but I don't think that case can be made here. Still I'll hold off for a few days until the quotes are migrated, or someone has morphed the section into something else, or I've happened to forget about it due to Attention deficit disorder.

I get great offense by this article assuming that it just 'happens' to have 99% of its journalists being British. This Channel is rigorous in Saint-ifying Britain while being sympathetic to Muslims. Al Jazeera to air in the U.S.

Concerning the anti-American bias section

Concerning the Anti-American bias section I think it's pretty obvious the channel is filled with British journalists, English correspondents, english writers, and this is pretty much obvious when it portrays Britain: it almost never shows it with a negative view and almost all coverage has to be pro-British interests. I don't think it's really anti-American, since that's a side-effect: What it is, is "BBC Arabic World". --Athinker (talk) 11:07, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

ownership

I see no reason why Thani can't or shouldn't be mentioned in the article (or its lead). However the suggested formulation was rather misleading, because AJE does des not have 2 different owners Thani and the Al Jazeera Media Network. Instead AJE is owned by its mother company Al Jazeera Media Network, which in turn is owned/funded by Thani.--Kmhkmh (talk) 03:20, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

Lead & ownership

I'm going to remove the last edit for 2 reasons.

  • Firstly information is redundant to the 2 sentences just before which already state that AJE is owned/funded by Thani/Quatar.
  • Secondly the added sources were a weird mix of useful and reputable (and probably should be used to expand the article outside the lead) ones, not so reputable ones and dysfunctional links. In addition some of them either do write about Al Jazeera (Arabic) rather than Al Jazeera English or do not distinguish between them.

--Kmhkmh (talk) 11:00, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

P.S. I added the dissertation under further reading. The other source of importance that could be used for extending the article is the Guardian article [2], which seems to be the first time that Quatar tried to influence directly the content of AJE (at least that i'm aware of). This could be evaluated and incorporated into the criticism section.--Kmhkmh (talk) 11:14, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
Good decision. As for being placed into the 'criticism' section, any criticism related to Al Jazeera's ownership should be put in Al Jazeera Media Network or Al Jazeera. There is no point in redundantly adding the same information to every channel affiliated with Al Jazeera such as Al Jazeera English, Al Jazeera Balkans, Al Jazeera Türk, etc. Especially when its already briefly stated in the article and is not directly critical of any specific channel, but rather the organization as a whole. I agree in this article belongs primarily criticism which is specific AJE not not so much that of the mother company or its sister channel.
Aside from the redundancy issue and sticking to the article's topic (being AJE not AJ) this also matters because in particular AJ(A) and AJE have their own journalistic staff and editors and they do differ significantly in scope, tone and content. Much of the criticism that published about AJ(A) simply doesn't apply to AJE and its content.
Having said the criticism in the guardian piece is AJE specific, so it could be incorporated into the criticism section.--Kmhkmh (talk) 09:30, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
Yes, you are right, my mistake for not checking the article. This could be incorporated into the criticism section. I agree with you that it is probably best if it is incorporated in that section rather than the lead. Elspamo4 (talk) 09:37, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
Further note: I can try adding it in the criticism section when I have some spare time, provided no one else takes the initiative. Elspamo4 (talk) 09:42, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
