Birthplace

The French Wikipedia page says he was born in jaipur. This page says Strasbourg.86.145.7.244 (talk) 22:52, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Languages and SAF

He speaks sixlanguages

Speaks at least 3 languages (French, English and German; no suprise, since he is from Strasbourg).

Alex Ferguson was knighted...should the title always be displayed?

Whilst on the subject of Fergie, in footballing terms, he too is a foreigner, as Scotland is independent with it's own FA and league system, meaning that Arsene is not the only foreigner to do the double, as both Fergie and Kenny Dalglish are foreigners as far as football is concerned. I'm not going to change it, as whenever I change anything, even if my changes are correct, someone puts it back and sends me a message telling me not to change stuff, so can someone else in a position of authority please correct this mistake.

Change the wording to non-British? Xiner (talk, email) 19:16, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Arsène Wenger

The fact that he is the only non-British manager to win the double is now out of date. Ancelotti's Chelsea won the double this year. 98.26.88.237 (talk) 19:50, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

Well, then it should say first rather than only. The C of E. God Save The Queen! (talk) 06:23, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

why is the first paragraph in bold?? its so annoying. 59.182.73.37 09:26, 3 November 2007 (UTC)DK59.182.73.37 09:26, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

I suggest to remove the last paragraph Controversies as it is small talk and very unimportant detail in such a man's career. The paragraph looks so elemantery and outdated as news.

Wenger must be German background...his last name doesnt sound French.... Does anybody know??? Its never mentioned which is a bit of a surprise....

He's from Strasbourg. Markyour words 21:52, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
Strasbourg is in the Alsace region which changed between "German" and French rule several times in the last 200 years. I did read an article that mentioned that his ancestors fought against 'the other side' but I can't remember which side they fought for, or if the sides were different for each generation.
Slumgum 22:40, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Why does it say in the awards section: In October 2004, he signed a contract extension that will keep him at Arsenal through the 2007/2008 season. What has this got to do with awards? sludgey choi chi men sohne

Top 2 finishes

I changed the sentence about never being outside the top 2 since 1998 as they finished 4th this year.
—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 195.93.21.70 (talkcontribs).

English playgers

I've made an edit to the comment about him not fielding "any" English players - change made to "many", due to the fact that he does actually field a few, including Sol Campbell and Ashley Cole. Cyril Washbrook 07:49, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Controversies

The article appears skewed towards events in last season maybe the section should be divided into rivalries with Sir Alex Ferguson/Manchester United, Morinhio/Chelsea and Jol/Tottenham Hotspur —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Vivbaker (talkcontribs).

So the main part of his career/life/biography is his rivalries with other managers? I don't think so. Yonatanh 02:59, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
The change in Arsenal's disciplinary record since the game at ManU in 2003 is worth pointing out, but I otherwise agree with you. Xiner 16:49, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

The man's picture

Is there no other good picture of the Professor in casual clothes? There's a guy in the background in the current one. Xiner 16:50, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

That guy is Boro Primorac, Arsenal's first team coach! (And a longtime right hand man of Arsene) TheMongoose 04:29, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
Of course. How daft of me. Xiner (talk, email) 19:17, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

School Teacher?

I've heard it said Wenger taught in a school for a while, is this true?

Controversies, Part 2

The last two or three incidents in that section are handbags. I think we should delete them. Xiner (talk, email) 17:10, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

The new photo

I reverted the change because a free-license image is already available, so I don't think the fair-use rationale works. Please let me know if you think I made a mistake. Xiner (talk, email) 02:09, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

I strongly urge the restoration of the original, free-use image on the article. I'd hate to list any more images for deletion on IFD than the three I have put there. Xiner (talk, email) 03:54, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

The new edit about Alan Shearer

Even if sourced, with all due respect, the passage is still neither here nor there on this article about the manager. I'll revert it later if no one does it first - it belongs in Shearer's article really. Xiner (talk, email) 22:40, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

The change to Controversies section

Please read through this page for previous discussions regarding the section, and substantially change the article only after a discussion. Thank you. The Carling Cup thing was blown out of proportion by the media - Andy Gray said two red cards would've sufficed! And it doesn't change the fact that no one's complained about Arsenal's disciplinary behavior in three years. Xiner (talk, email) 14:32, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Milestone

Sky Sports News claimed that the Gunners' next game will be Wenger's 400th league game in charge, which puts the 605 stated in the article in question. - Dudesleeper · Talk 19:32, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

I only see the ca.-600 numbers in the article when talking about Wenger's total games in charge of Arsenal. That includes cup games like the F.A. Cup. Xiner (talk, email) 19:37, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
I thought only league games were to be included in those tables. Are cup games included in his stats for his other managerial positions? If not, that makes it very Arsenal top-heavy. Dudesleeper · Talk 19:51, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
Usually they break them out into cup and league games, but please see Alex_Ferguson#Managerial_honours. Total games include cup games there, it seems. Xiner (talk, email) 20:17, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject Biography

I'd deliberately left it out of WikiBanners because I thought the BLP warning should be displayed prominently. Xiner (talk, email) 13:16, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Assistant

Does anyone have any useful info about Arsene's relationship with Pat Rice, or any of his other assistants elsewhere? I think this would be a useful addition to the article.  slυмgυм [ ←→ ] 18:15, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Accomplishments

I've changed the part where Wenger signed these "unknown players" at Arsenal. As far as I recall, Nicolas Anelka was relatively heard of in England, during 1997 - before he signed for the Gunners. Manchester United and Liverpool were also linked to the French striker. Lemonade51 20:38, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I checked the french article and I saw that he got a Bachelor's degree of economic sciences, and not a master. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.121.141.74 (talk) 19:30, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

The speedy tag wasn't placed in error, it was an obvious act of vandalism and has been removed. --Jameboy 22:02, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Opening paragraph

The second sentence of thie introduction describes Arsene Wenger as "the club's most successful manager", without having actually specified which club he manages. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.69.83.230 (talk) 00:20, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

Absent personal life

This page could do with a thing or two about him that aren't related to his career —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.196.255.189 (talk) 15:57, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

OBE

As he is not a citizen of the UK or one of its current/former overseas territories, I believe he only has an honorary OBE. Does this entitle him to be styled "Arsene Wenger OBE", as the first sentence currently shows? I honestly don't know........ ChrisTheDude (talk) 10:21, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

  • Yes, he is entitled to have OBE at the end of his name, like Bono has KBE at the end of his. Its only if he got a Knighthood then he would be not be entitled to be Sir Arsene Wenger (unless he changed nationality) The C of E (talk) 19:18, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Introduction

"He is also the club's longest-serving manager in terms of matches played (681 as of the start of the 2008/09 season)." Played? Doesn't quite make sense. Perhaps there's a better way to verbalize this. sixtynine • spill it • 08:15, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Old Vandalism

Height

Arsene Wenger is 6'4 (193 centimetres) tall! He's widely regarded as the tallest football manager in elite football.

Watch inmages of him with Tony Adams, and David Seaman. He's actually taller than both - Seaman being quoted as a legit 6'4. The fact he's taller is down to the fact he's wearing regular shoes, and not studded boots.

Honestly, surf the net. Wenger's recognised as a legit 6'4 minimum. The guy is huge. He could be pushing 6'5. He's certainly not 5'11! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.128.223.68 (talk) 18:32, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Rogue category

Does the redlink category "WDL error" mean anything or is it just a mistake or vandalism? Apologies if this has some significance, it's just I've yet to encounter it on Wikipedia. Keresaspa (talk) 23:25, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

Managerial career

Arsene penned a 3 year contract extension on August 14th 2010 committing his future to 2014 with the club —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.170.136.197 (talk) 11:20, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

El Pais European Manager of the Year

Arsene was named El Pais European Manager of the Year in 2007 By the Uruguayan newspaper El País according to www.rssf.com/miscellaneous/sam-euopy.html. Any coach in Europe is eligable to win the award and in 2007 wenger won it and as this is a prestigious award i feel it should be included in Wenger's individual honours —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.27.32.65 (talk) 20:54, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

The award isn't notable because it isn't recognised by either UEFA or FIFA. It's an award made a Uruguyan newspaper. Fly by Night (talk) 22:27, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

Edit request from Feeanor, 5 March 2011

{{edit semi-protected}} There is no information about Wenger's newest contract, which ties him to the club until june 2014: http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/ars-ne-wenger-signs-contract-extension The text could be added at the end of "Managerial Career" and could be "14. Controversial manager

There should be some information in the article about the facts. Many fans/players lost confidence in him. He divides the fans and his opposition grows and grows every day. He failed to get proper defenders/goal keeper for years. He cannot motivate the players. Seeing his impotence the players want out. No tactical awareness (down to 10 men leading 4-0 the team kept attacking against Newcastle), "gambling" with the players (in January there was no substitute defender and he did not even borrow anybody, similar goalie problems). Total impotence in the transfer market, The club talked about an imminent Gervinho deal, but Lille revealed he did not even make an offer. If it goes on like that this guy will have us relegated (team exodus looks imminent). He talked about mental strength when the "strong" team blew everything (Tottenham matches, Newcastle 4-4 from 4-0, West Brom matches, Carling Cup final, no shots on goal against Barcelona, loss/struggle against poor championship teams). Total collapse at the end of the seasons (if we take the end of season form this year we should be relegated). Too many injuries. 90.205.17.150 (talk) 00:14, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

Don't be silly, we haven't been relegated before and I doubt next year will cause it to happen. Besides you need a source for all that. The C of E. God Save The Queen! (talk) 14:59, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

Ok. You're right. I was angry. At least we have a good news today (about signing Gervinho).90.205.17.150 (talk) 12:20, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

It's a small issue but the link to the page George Graham from Tony Adam's quotation about the arrival of Wenger links to a disambiguation page, it should go directly to the page George Graham (footballer). SAuhsoj (talk) 04:01, 5 November 2011 (UTC)
