X: Atrangi Re was officially announced with a motion poster on 30 January 2020.[1] Khan and Dhanush commenced shoot on 1 March 2020 in Lucknow, before the production got halted in the 3rd week of March due to COVID-19 pandemic in India.[2] Both of them resumed their portions in July 2020, post which Kumar joined the sets on 4 December 2020.[3] Dhanush and Kumar wrapped up the film in the end of December.[4][5] Finally entire film was wrapped up on 27 March 2021.[6][7]
Y: include sections development and filming
Development Following the release of Zero (2018), director Aanand L. Rai wanted to cast Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan together in a project.[8][9] However, as both the actors turned down their offer to their commitments in several films,[10][11] Rai decided to work with Dhanush, after being present at the promotional event of The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir (2019) in Mumbai.[12] This marked the second collaboration between the Rai and Dhanush, after Raanjhanaa (2013), also being the latter's debut in Bollywood.[13][14] Sara Ali Khan was also cast in the leading role opposite Dhanush, and Hrithik Roshan was approached to play a pivotal role in the film.[15][16] Hrithik denied his part in the film, saying that he was not contacted by the director.[17] In January 2020, a report from Filmfare stated that Akshay Kumar had signed the film in another leading role.[18] His role was said to be an extended cameo which Rai had refuted and further stated that "it is a special character which is demanded for the narrative".[19] After Rai narrated the script to Kumar, he decided to play the role in the film, with Rai elated as "he responded to his honesty".[19][20] The project was officially announced on 30 January 2020, with Akshay Kumar being announced as a part of the cast, along with Sara and Dhanush being confirmed to play the leading roles and the film being titled Atrangi Re.[21][22] Furthermore, A. R. Rahman was reported to score the soundtrack and film score, with lyricist Irshad Kamil and writer Himanshu Sharma being brought on-board; which marked Rai's second collaboration with the composer, lyricist and writer, after working together in Raanjhanaa.[23]
Speaking about the film, in an interview with The Times of India, on 12 February 2020, Rai opined that "the subject of the film cannot be slotted in any genre".[19] The characters in the film are considered to be "funnily weird and have their emotional journey", according to Rai, who further added about the casting of the film, "I am always looking for partners who are as emotionally touched as I am with the story and all three of them are like that. Every character in this film has it's own traits will put them in an unseen space."[24] Rai decided to set the storyline in Bihar and Madurai, in belief that the film will "be an amalgamation of two Indian cultures".[19] It has been reported that the title was initially registered by Salman Khan under his production company, and gave the title to Rai under a condition that the film was directed by Rai himself. He expressed his gratitude to Khan for giving up the title.[25]
A report from Hindustan Times, dated 20 February 2020, claimed that "the film will be set in two different eras and Sara will play dual role, romancing both the lead actors".[26] While the claims were considered to be false,[27] netizens were worried about the pairing between Akshay and Sara, who share an age-gap of 28 years between the actors.[28] Sara Ali Khan, on the pairing between the lead actors, stated this an in an interview with Koimoi saying: "We are all here to do the same thing, which is making a film are we-are putting our hundred-percent efforts. At that point the age, the gender – it doesn’t matter, it really truly doesn’t matter. And at that moment if you are making, what you think is a good film, (then) you’re not the actor. You are the character. It’s that magic. At that point, the rest become immaterial."[29]
Filming The team planned to begin shooting for the film at March 2020 and continue for 80-90 days, with the Bihar schedule being canned first and the rest of the shooting in Madurai will begin in mid-April 2020.[19] Principal photography, however, began on 5 March 2020 at Varanasi,[30] where the team canned few sequences during this schedule with Sara and Dhanush, including one being shot at the Kashi Railway Station, near Rajghat.[31] However, filming was interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in India.[32][33] In July 2020, it was reported that the film might restart shooting from October 2020, as Rai had planned to shoot the film in real locations across Madurai, Delhi and Mumbai, as other films were being shot at confined studio set-up due to the pandemic restrictions.[34][35] The team planned to set up the shooting schedule at Madurai first and return to Varanasi for continuation.[33] Filming resumed on 5 October 2020 at Karaikudi with Dhanush joining the schedule.[36] In 12 October 2020, the team canned a dance number featuring Dhanush, and Dimple Hayathi also became a part of the schedule.[37][38]
In November 2020, Dhanush and Sara resumed shooting for the final schedule in Delhi.[39][40] After a five-day shoot in Delhi, the team moved to Greater Noida on 29 November 2020. A sequence featuring the lead actors, were shot at the outdoors of Sharda University with the students and locals featuring as extras.[41] On 4 December, Akshay Kumar joined the shooting for the film at the location after completing the shooting for Bell Bottom (2021).[42][43] The filming continued at Delhi NCR, with the lead actors participating the schedule for 25 days in and around Delhi.[44] Nimrat Kaur joined the schedule in addition to the cast.[44] On 21 December, the team shifted to shoot few sequences at Agra;[45] several sequences featuring the lead cast were shot at the Taj Mahal,[46][47] including, one with a song shoot featuring Akshay.[48] On 29 December, Dhanush had completed shooting for his portions of the film.[49][50] In March 2021, a seven-day shooting schedule took place in Mumbai, with the lead actors joining the schedule. Dhanush, who began shooting for the Karthick Naren-directorial Maaran, had participated the minor schedule.[51] Filming was completed by 29 March 2021.[52]
X: The film score and soundtrack are composed by A. R. Rahman making his second collaboration with Aanand L. Rai after Raanjhanaa, with lyrics by Irshad Kamil.[53] The film's songs are folk-classical-based compositions.[54] Chaka Chak, served as the first single which was released onto digital download platforms on 29 November 2021.[55] Sung by Shreya Ghoshal, the song is based on Carnatic music.[56] Dhanush performed a song for the album.[57] Second song "Rait Zara Si" released On 6 December 2021.[58] The album was released on 6 December 2021.[59][60]
Y: The original soundtrack and film score to Atrangi Re was composed by A. R. Rahman and lyrics being written by Irshad Kamil. Rahman had composed all the tracks based on the off-screen and on-screen personalities of the lead actors.[61] The tracks "Garda" and "Little Little" were pictured respectively on the lead actors Akshay Kumar and Dhanush (also singing for the track and writing the Tamil-lyrics for the dubbed Tamil version).[62] Kamil came up with choice of words, while writing the tracks "Chaka Chak" and "Little Little". The music reflects the moods and sentiments of the characters as the film plot travels across India. All the tracks were based on folk and classical music compositions, as per the setting of the film.[63]
With two tracks — "Chaka Chak" and "Little Little" — being released as singles, the soundtrack album, featuring seven tracks, was released by T-Series on 6 December 2021.[64] The release coincided with a promotional launch event held in Mumbai,[65] and also a musical concert by Rahman and his team performed at the event.[66][67] The soundtrack to the Tamil-dubbed version titled Galatta Kalyaanam featured lyrics written by Madhan Karky, Yugabharathi, Vivek, Kabilan, Rohini and Dhanush. It was released on 10 December 2021.[68] The album received positive response with critics applauding Rahman for his folk and melody-based compositions.
X: It was originally scheduled for worldwide release on 14 February 2021 in theatres, coinciding with Valentine's Day.[69][70] However, it was indefinitely pushed due to post-production delays owing to COVID-19 pandemic in India. A release was announced for 6 August 2021, but the film was not released.[71] In August 2021, it was revealed that film is looking for a direct to digital premiere. On November 23, 2021, Disney+ Hotstar announced that the film premiered on the platform on December 24, 2021 along with the Tamil version Galatta Kalyanam.[72][73]
Y: The film was initially scheduled for theatrical release on Valentine's Day (14 February 2021).[74][75] However, production delays due to the COVID-19 lockdown in India forced the makers to postpone the release to 6 August 2021.[76][77] It did not release, as planned, due to the uncertainity prevailing over the reopening of theatres in Maharashtra. In September 2021, it was reported that the film might have a direct-to-digital release, despite the resumption of theatrical business in Maharashtra from October 2021.[78] Akshay Kumar also hinted the possibilities of it, citing the saturation of big-budget theatrical release might impacts its collections.[79][80] In mid-November 2021, the producers announced that the film will have a digital release through Disney+ Hotstar on the occasion of Christmas Eve (24 December 2021).[81][82] The film was also sold to the streaming partner, at a cost of ₹200 crore (US$24 million), the second highest deal for a digital release, preceeded by Radhe (2021).[83]
The official trailer of the film premiered on 24 November 2021 and received positive response from audiences.[84] The film was promoted at the Koffee Shots with Karan, a simplified one-episode show of Koffee with Karan (which was cancelled after six seasons) hosted by Karan Johar.[85] Dhanush and Sara Ali Khan presented at the show.[86][87] Akshay Kumar, Sara and Rai also promoted the film at The Kapil Sharma Show.[88] The film's poster was showcased at Times Square in New York, ahead of the film's release.[89][90] The film was also dubbed in Tamil and released under the title Galatta Kalyaanam, which was named after Sivaji Ganesan's 1968 film of the same name.[91] The Tamil-version of the film also premiered at Disney+ Hotstar, the same day.[91]
