Overall this is a very good article, I just have one issue I found:
- "After a two-year break from baseball because of World War I," That explains 1918, but not 1919. Elaborate.
I'll put it on hold and pass it when it's addressed. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 04:06, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Not sure why the 1919 break, all I know that he didn't play in 1919 so I edited it. Secret account 12:50, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
- K. Looks good, article passes. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 16:39, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
Alt descriptions
[edit]Alt descriptions are generally read before the captions, so it is important to identify the subject immediately.
I find the description of Paschal as tall but non muscular positively hilarious! This guy isn't a weightlifter or a wrestler. The terminator is not the benchmark of what might be termed "muscular' regardless of the fact that nowadays so many people "work-out"! Take another look at this man's neck and forearms. He is not particularly broad in the shoulders, but his thighs are massive. Amandajm (talk) 08:29, 7 March 2010 (UTC)
More about alt descriptions
[edit]Alt descriptions are read before tha caption. If you are not going to state who is being described, then there is no point in describing them. It is possible, to have a article that describes the photos of a dozen different individuals. "Man with a round face and smile looking to the left. John Bloggs." "Man with a long face and a scowl looking to the right, Tom Noggs."
We are writing these captions for the blind. Believe me, your blind reader does not mind hearing: "Studio portrait of John Bloggs who is a round faced smiling man. John Bloggs in 1923" and "Identity picture of Tom Noggs who is a long faced scowling man. Tom Noggs on his arrest in 1923." I discussed this at some length on the Alt description talk page, but don't know to whether the MOS has been changed accordingly yet.
Moreover, there seems to be a concensus that Alt descriptions need to be more interpretive than regular captions. One would hesitate to interpret the expression of a person's face in a regular caption. Yet a blind person really values this sort of information and relies upon the sighted to provide it. In a real life situation, the blind person guages a person's mood, character etc from what they hear, including non verbal sounds, breathing, shuffling etc. But with pictorial information, they are denied these cues. So if you can possibly indicate the expression of the person in the pic, it is useful. Amandajm (talk) 12:25, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
- The only issue our versions differ in was whether the names should be included. I also replied to that at my talk page, but here you are making some different arguments. WP:ALT#Portraits agrees that names generally should not be mentioned; if you think that ought to be changed, please go to WT:ALT to have the guideline changed. Ucucha 13:00, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
