Improvement plan

[edit]

I'm planning on improving this article. Here's some sections I'm thinking of adding.

  • History
    • ASICBoost
    • Involvement with BCH
    • IPO
    • Huston Rocket Sponsership
  • Products
    • SHA256/Bitcoin Miner
    • Script/Litecoin Miner
    • X11/Dash Miner
    • Blake(2b) Miner
    • CryptoNight Miner
    • Ethash Miner
    • Equihash Miner
    • Blake(14r) Miner
  • BTC.com
  • Antpool
  • Competition

The following are the sources I'm thinking of drawing from for some of these sections.

Please use better sources. I would say that from the above list only Bloomberg is acceptable. No blogs, please, and other self-published sources. Thank you. Retimuko (talk) 17:11, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Would you consider wayback machine links to old product pages from bitmaintech.com be acceptable for talking about the advertised speed and price of the antminers they released from the past? YiwenDong191919 (talk) 18:55, 14 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think that would be interesting and encyclopedic to have the hashrate and prices for the obsolete products. Let's see what other editors think. Jtbobwaysf (talk) 05:53, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I added a section on AsicBoost to the history section. I know this can be a controversial area and I tried to keep it neutral. YiwenDong191919 (talk) 17:02, 26 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@YiwenDong191919: you left a message on my talk page and I thought better to reply here since I wanted to get more feedback on my comments from others. I took a look at the suggested edits on your talk page here [1] and my feedback is some of it is interesting but in general, it is probably too detailed for a wikipedia article. I think a summary of the history of their notable products would be good. I am sure there is some wikipedia guideline on this (and I dont know what guideline it is), so I will loop in jytdog (talk · contribs) to see if he has some suggestions. I do know that we need to use good sources, but in some cases, primary sources might be ok for purely informational purposes. But then that information shouldn't provide too much detail that might make the article look promotional or like a product catalog. Let's see if some other editors steer us in the right direction. Thank you! Jtbobwaysf (talk) 18:12, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ah make sense. Good sources are hard to come by for some of this. I feel like topics on Bitcoin cash and AsicBoost are kind of important to at least have a mention because of the controversy the have stured up in the community. I've considered adding medium articles such as [2] and [3] where members of the community talked about Bitmain's behavior of and their effects on the overall crypto community. I thought they were too opinionated though so I left them out and stuck more to what was said such as from Bitmain offcial and Greg Maxwell which themselves are biased as well. I'll try to think of ways to make these less promotional. Thank you for your feedbacks. YiwenDong191919 (talk) 06:01, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, i find those topics interesting as well. However, as you mention the sources are really sparse and Wikipedia policy is generally doesn't allow for Medium, company blogs, etc. In the case of crypto as there has been a problem with promotionalism the requirements are now even stricter than other less patrolled wikipedia subjects. source

[edit]

Nice source from Fortune [4] that discusses bitmain. Jtbobwaysf (talk) 19:03, 16 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

new content

[edit]

@Josh.a.chu: you are adding some content about a lawsuit with bitmain and you said something like that bitmain was ordered to pay double in court costs what it had sought in the lawsuit. Can you please use numbers instead of this generalization? The generalization creates WP:WEIGHT problems and is not encyclopedic. Thanks! Jtbobwaysf (talk) 14:09, 15 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

sources

[edit]

@Pjor3c: I see you have added new content to this article. Please be advised that there is a strict sourcing policy in place for cryptocurrency articles. This means that we are not using coindesk, linkedin (user generated content), etc. Please only use high quality mainstream news sites (scmp, wsj, nyt, xinhua, caijing, etc). Please remove the sources that you have added that do not comply with this. Thanks! Jtbobwaysf (talk) 10:16, 18 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Pjor3c: You might be able to find Chinese language sources for Bitmain. Those will be ok for us here, as long as they are high quality in general. Thanks! Jtbobwaysf (talk) 15:26, 18 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
