Sources used in the article

[edit]

I did some updating to clean up the formatting and information presented on each of the citations. However, several need to be replaced because they are self-published sources. Based on the footnote numbers in this revision of the article, I offer the following comments:

  1. Archiplanet is a wiki, and we can't use other wikis as a source. I was able to edit that sourced page without an account, meaning that there is no format editorial control/oversight.
  2. National Park Service, no issues.
  3. Legends of America is an online magazine with editorial oversight by its owners of the content produced by the team of writers.
  4. This is a self-published website that appears to be about a book. The book, assuming it wasn't published through a vanity press, would be subject to editorial oversight by the publisher, and it would meet the criteria for inclusion as a source. This website does not.
  5. Another self-published website that doesn't appear to have any editorial control or oversight.
  6. The website of the business itself ideally should not be used a a source in its own article, however since it is only contributing a quotation, this isn't a big deal.
  7. Published by a professor of internet communications at a reputable state university. This should meet the "expert in [his] field" exception to self publication. The university would exercise some control over personal writings such as this published on their servers as well.
  8. This one appears to be a news-style blog written by a member of a Route 66 association. I didn't tag it as failing reliability requirements, but it should be discussed first.
  9. USA Today, no issues.
  10. Appears to be the website connected to a smartphone app. I don't know how reliable this would be regarded. This also bears some discussion.

I hope that these comments are helpful. Please keep up the good work in the future, but please also familiarize yourselves with the appropriate policies on reliable sources. Imzadi 1979  09:24, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Because the references may change as the article is edited, I think it's important to note that this is what the article looked like when the above comment was written. →Wordbuilder (talk) 14:09, 20 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The Cars (film) is an odd item to try to source... there's a whole list on route66news.com/2006/06/09/a-route-66-guide-to-the-cars-movie (blog) matching film locations to real-world US 66 properties, (in Dutch: www.rte66.nl/index.php/de-film-cars and in French webstern.e-monsite.com/pages/la-route-66/le-film-cars-et-la-route-66.html ) but nothing official to confirm that, indeed, the Cozy Cone Motel is the Wigwam Motel with the office building architecture of Roy's Motel and Café and the unique "100% Refrigerated Air" slogan from the Blue Swallow Motel while the Wheel Well Motel is named for the Wagon Wheel Motel (and perhaps the now-demolished Wishing Well Motel in Illinois). Something like "Tucumcari Tonite!" (slogan), which appeared on US 66 billboards for hundreds of miles, should be easy to find as it appears in multiple sources. Much of the core info (such as dates of construction and ownership changes) is on the NRHS listing or supporting documentation (the National Park Service devotes a good page to this property). 66.102.83.61 (talk) 17:04, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I checked again and Cars (film) mentions this place by name in the closing credits, along with the names of the owners at the time the research was done for the movie. Seems kinda odd to cite a Disney film as WP:RS in an encyclopaedia, but if the only thing it's being cited for is that some piece of the film mentions this place, there it is... in the section "A special thanks to those who inspired us on Route 66, the mother road" in the film's credits. 66.102.83.61 (talk) 22:46, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
