Pronunciation

[edit]

Moved "(pronounced bu-ROO)" for discussion. Admittedly I pronounce it with a Jersey accent, but for me the stress falls on the first syllable - as in Écréhous. If there's a source for Alderney end-stress, could that be added? Man vyi (talk) 06:48, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I added the pronunciation based on the Channel Islands Appendix to the BBC Pronouncing Dictionary, which is scrupulous about differentiating Guernsey and Jersey pronunciations where relevant. Since they give only this pronunciation (bu-ROO) for Burhou, I deduce that it is the most relevant (presumably Alderney) pronunciation. It is, of course, possible that the pronunciation has changed since 1971, or that the book is wrong, but unless you have a contrary reference it seems to me better to leave the referenced one in the article. I should add that the Appendix gives an initial-stress pronunciation for Écréhous (EK-ri-hoe), which seems to lend credence to its accuracy. Languagehat (talk) 16:02, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
EK-ri-hoe? Another horrible BBC pronunciation. Man vyi (talk) 16:57, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since there has been no further comment on the Talk page, I have restored the pronunciation I originally added, which is sourced; obviously if anyone wants to add an alternate pronunciation they should do so, but I do not think it makes sense to leave the entry without a pronunciation. Fair enough. Just checking. Man vyi (talk) 16:57, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
