Wording
[edit]"Catlin possesses a beautiful campus, with a layout, natural environment, and architecture rivalling many college campuses." Isn't this sentence mostly a value judgement? It seems out of place in an encyclopedia, but I am new here so I'm not sure. I would think it would be better to say "Catlin Gabel's school grounds have much in common with a typical (non-urban) college campus" or something like that. Boris B 12:58, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
- They are pretty nice, but I've removed it for now. --Liface 15:09, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit]There's one weird photo of the campus. I've added the reqphoto tag, as it'd be nice to have a generic shot of the campus, rather than a weird photo showing snowfall. tedder (talk) 06:39, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Edit Request for School Traditions Section
[edit]Hello: I am in a COI/Paid editing relationship with Catlin Gabel School and in compliance with Wikipedia rules, I'm declaring this relationship and proposing edits on the talk page. They have several updates they would like to propose over the next several weeks. My first request is, an update to the rummage sale under the School traditions section. It also includes a better -- third party source. The update is as follows:
Current text | Replace with |
---|---|
This rummage sale was similar to a large garage sale –– people would donate items that would be sorted and then later sold. The “Rummage Sale” became a school tradition.[24] | The school's Annual Rummage Sale began during World War II and ran for 65 years, with the first event raising over $8,000. The event grew so large it was eventually moved to the Portland Expo Center. The last event was held in 2009.[1] |

COI Editor Requesting Assistance with Updates
[edit]Hello: I am a COI/paid editor in a working relationship with the Catlin Gabel School. They would like to make several updates to their page and I'm looking for volunteer editors who may wish to help. I see that you are involved in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Oregon page and thought you might consider helping out the school User:Darryl.P.Pike, User:DJ Cane, User:PortlandSaint, and/or User:Lord Bolingbroke. My goal is to improve Wikipedia in a transparent fashion and to follow the rules and guidelines.
The first update they would like to make is to add content to their introduction, as follows:
Current text | Replace with |
---|---|
The Catlin Gabel School is an independent preschool through 12th grade institution located on 67 acres in Portland, Oregon 5 miles west of downtown.[1] | The Catlin Gabel School is an independent preschool through 12th grade institution located on 67 acres in Portland, Oregon, five miles west of downtown.[2] Annual enrollment is approximately 780 students from a wide variety of cultures, backgrounds, and financial abilities across the Portland metro area. The school’s educational philosophy is founded on the four principles of progressive education (inquiry based, educating for democracy, teaching the whole child, and experiential learning). |
You will also see a request I posted on February 23rd updating the information about their annual rummage sale tradition. Thank you for your time and consideration of these requests. Best, LeepKendall (talk) 00:19, 4 March 2021 (UTC)

COI Edit Request
[edit]Hello: Thank you for your help on my request yesterday User:PortlandSaint. I would like to propose two more edits to this page today. One is in the history section. Just before the Malone Family Foundation sentence, we'd like to add this about a bequest. These two sentences can be one paragraph when this edit is complete.
Catlin Gabel received a $3.8 million bequest from Howard Vollum (co-founder of Tektronix) in the late 1980s, growing the school’s endowment.[1]
Then under the traditions section, they would like to clean up and expand on their annual rummage sale with the following:
Current text | Replace with |
---|---|

COI Edit Request
[edit]Hello: Thank you for your previous assistance User:PortlandSaint. Given that I am in a COI/Paid Editing relationship with Catlin Gabel, I would like to propose the following updates to the page - according to Wikipedia guidelines.
I'd like to request that we change the Accreditation header to read Accreditation and rankings. Then add the following after the NWAIS sentence. In both 2020 and 2021, Niche, a national school and workplace ranking and review site, ranked Catlin Gabel #1 on Oregon’s 25 Best K-12 Schools list. So, using the table format, this is how it will look.
Current text | Combined text |
---|---|
Catlin Gabel is accredited by the Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS). | Catlin Gabel is accredited by the Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS). In both 2020 and 2021, Niche, a national school and workplace ranking and review site, ranked Catlin Gabel #1 on Oregon’s 25 Best K-12 Schools list.[1] In 2020, the school was also ranked as the number one best high school for STEM in the state.[2] |
After this addition/edit, this sentence can be deleted as it will be included in my edit above. As of 2020, school review website Niche ranks Catlin Gabel as the number one best overall private high school and number one best high school for STEM in the state of Oregon. I will be addressing the Science Research content in an upcoming request. Thank you so much for your review. Best, LeepKendall (talk) 18:55, 8 March 2021 (UTC)

COI Edit Request for New Section
[edit]I realize I made an error when posting this request by setting up Sustainability with section formatting. This request can now be ignored and I will make the correction in the following section. I would like to request adding a new section to this article entitled Sustainability. I'd like to request that it go between the Sports and School traditions sections unless volunteer editors have another suggestion. I realize the source for the sustainability team bullet is their own website, but am wondering if we can use it even though it is a primary source. I would greatly appreciate your assistance User:Margalob, User:PortlandSaint and that of any other volunteer editors. This new section is as follows:
Thank you LeepKendall (talk) 15:42, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
Hello:
I have updated and fixed my request for a new section to this article entitled Sustainability. I'd like it to go between the Sports and School traditions sections unless volunteer editors have another suggestion. I would greatly appreciate your assistance User:Margalob, User:PortlandSaint and that of any other volunteer editors. I have summarized and shortened this section from my previous request. This (corrected) new section is as follows:
All grades include an aspect of environmental and social sustainability.[1] Grades one through five student projects include a worm farm and seedling starts for the campus garden. Middle school students research studies on topics including obesity, agribusiness, the global food supply-chain and the carbon footprint of food. The Upper school’s PLACE Program (Planning and Leadership Across City Environments) uses urban planning to study sustainability.[1]
Since 2007, the school has instituted food services programs such as switching to washable dinnerware in the cafeteria and sourcing food from local farms within 150 miles radius.[1] Within one year the school reduced its landfill contributions by 32.49 tons, and in 2016, after realizing that their recycled plastic was making its way to landfills, two students convinced the school to stop selling bottled water.[2] In 2020, students and community partners removed 25 truckloads of invasive species from 2.5 acres of school property and planted over 2,000 native shrubs and trees.[3]
Thank you for your consideration! Best LeepKendall (talk) 15:52, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

Accreditation question
[edit]LeepKendall, I attempted to update citation [4], which is a permanent dead link, but it appears that NWAC has changed to AdvanED, then that changed to Cognia? Could you please verify the accrediting body for Catlin Gabel School? Many thanks. Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 20:37, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
- Hi User:Grand'mere Eugene. I've been away, and busy catching up and just realized you sent me this question. I will definitely check and get back with you. Thank you! LeepKendall (talk) 00:23, 28 April 2021 (UTC)
- Hi User:Grand'mere Eugene. Can you let me know if this link will work? https://www.nwais.org/page.cfm?p=53&start=1 Thank you! LeepKendall (talk) 15:19, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
- LeepKendall Yes, perfect. You may want to add the school's non-profit status, confirmed by the the charity navigator external link, using it as a citation in the article. The reason that's important has to do with Wikipedia's notability requirement for schools operated for-profi. Non-profits only need to meet WP:GNG, but for-profits have to meet both the ORG and GNG requirements. — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 17:19, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

COI Request to update 'Activities' Section
[edit]Hello:
I would like to request changing the section name of ‘Activities’ to ‘Student Competition Activities’. Then I would like to move this sentence from the ‘Accreditation’ section to be the first thing in this section: “Catlin Gabel has a long history of science research competition success. Over the years, many students have placed highly in competitions such as the Intel Science Talent Search, the Siemens Competition, the Davidson Fellows Scholarship, and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.[18][19][20] If we can do that, we can then delete the subheading of ‘Science research’ from the Accreditation section.
This newly named section, “Student Competition Activities” would then read as follows with a few edits and some requested new material. New material is in bold, and editing updates are noted with strikeout. I acknowledge that a few new sources are primary and not third-party, however, the school has asked that I make this request.
Activities Student Competition Activities
Catlin Gabel has a long history of science research competition success. Over the years, many students have placed highly in competitions such as the Intel Science Talent Search, the Siemens Competition, the Davidson Fellows Scholarship, and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.[1][2][3]
Since 2005, Catlin Gabel has operated a team in the FIRST Robotics Competition since 2005, called "The Flaming Chickens". The team has consistently qualified for the FIRST World Championships competition competed in the FIRST Robotics Competition and qualified for the FIRST Championships Competition every year since its inception almost every year.[4] In 2020, Tiffany Toh, a member of “The Flaming Chickens”, was named one of ten Dean’s List winners at the FIRST Robotics World award ceremony out of more than 90,000 students.[5]
A team of five Catlin Gabel students won the 2019 BPA Regional Science Bowl out of 114 regional teams, a win that sent them to the Department of Energy National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. later that same year. Student Avi Gupta was also recognized individually as an all star.[6]
Catlin Gabel has been a successful participant in the Oregon Mock Trial competition, and has often gone to the national competition.[7]
Since the founding of its chess club, Gabel’s Varsity Chess Team has taken 1st in the Oregon High School Chess Team Association Championships three years in a row.[8]
You've been such a great help User:Grand'mere Eugene that I'm tagging you here just in case you have time. Thanks to all for your time and consideration. Best, LeepKendall (talk) 17:41, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
- Hi there. I'm wondering if I've made this request too complicated as it hasn't received any feedback. User:PortlandSaint or User:Margalob I'm wondering if you might have time to review this new section? Thank you in advance. Best, LeepKendall (talk) 00:28, 28 April 2021 (UTC)
Done --Sorry to have missed your note above. I must have taken this page off my watchlist. In order for a ping to find me, the code needs curly brackets: {{U|Grand'mere Eugene}}. I'll pay more attention next time. I also added non-profit status and citations for that and accreditation. Let me know if I missed something.
- Hi Grand'mere Eugene. Thank you so much for the updates, and for adding in the non-profit status. I so appreciate your help. I don’t see the Niche sentence in the article anymore. It WAS in a strange place (under science research) and may have gotten lost in the restructuring of Student Competition Activities? Do you think ‘Accreditation’ can be changed to ‘Accreditation and Rankings’, and then we can add back this sentence below under the accreditation sentence?? I’d appreciate your thoughts.
- As of 2020, school review website Niche (company) ranks Catlin Gabel as the number one overall private high school and number one best high school for STEM in the state of Oregon.[9] Best! LeepKendall (talk) 16:49, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, LeepKendall, I had been told a few years ago that Niche is not considered a reliable source, but I just posted a query at the Project Schools Talk page. Give it a few days for other editors to respond. Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 19:52, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
- Oh, okay Grand'mere Eugene. Thank you for checking that out. LeepKendall (talk) 16:24, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Grand'mere Eugene. I was wondering if you ever received word on if Niche (company) is an acceptable source. Also, Catlin Gabel will have more updates in the fall. I look forward to reaching out to you then for some possible assistance if you have time. Best LeepKendall (talk) 21:15, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
- Done Hi LeepKendall-- Thanks for your patience. The discussion about Niche didn't rule out using the statement as it had been proposed, and I did find that the ratings appropriately weighted national data points and the more subjective survey data. I added the Niche statement, and we just need to pay attention to any yearly updates. Feel free to ping me with additions/modifications. Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 21:48, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
