- ProLifeDC (talk) 23:30, 26 June 2010 (UTC) I will be making edits to this page in the future. I am employed by AUL but I will pay special attention to following guidelines, especially related to NPOV.
- I have made a handful of edits that were additions of inline references to material already on this page. I also added information about Dr. Yoest testifying in the Kagan confirmation hearings on July 1, 2010. ProLifeDC (talk) 16:44, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
Delete via redirect
[edit]An editor replaced the content with a redirect. Article looks notable to me.Lionel (talk) 18:46, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
- Could you explain why you believe this? Reliable sources do not cover her in any detail that satisfies WP:GNG, WP:BIO, etc. She gets quoted a lot in articles that aren't about her, but this obviously is not evidence of notability. Roscelese (talk ⋅ contribs) 03:41, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
- She is notable, but I can't find much on her specifically/personally on a brief search. Marjorie Dannenfelser has sources showing her notability outside of the SBA List, but I can't find the same with Yoest. May have to redirect her back to AUL. NYyankees51 (talk) 15:47, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
- That was basically what I thought. Her name is a legitimate search term (if for nothing else than "I remember her name, which organization did she run again?"), so I don't want to delete the article outright, but she doesn't seem to have received any coverage. On the other hand, as you point out, Dannenfelser has that WaPo article all about her, and it's possible that there is more. Roscelese (talk ⋅ contribs) 01:55, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Most recently, on August 15, 2011, The Christian Science Monitor profiled Yoest in a story that appeared as a cover story in that publication[1].
Yoest was invited to testify before the Judiciary Committee of the United States Senate at confirmation hearings for Justices Sonia Sotomayor[2] and Elena Kagan[3] . ProLifeDC (talk) 15:46, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

Removed Redirect
[edit]I have removed the redirect from this page and restored it to what it was before there seemed to have been a redirect/remove war. The reasons were noted on this talk page in other sections and also on Talk:Americans_United_for_Life. I will be making the edits discussed as well as some others to improve the page and prove further notability. As mentioned, I discussed this on the AUL talk page and also with other friends more knowledgeable about Wikipedia than me.ProLifeDC (talk) 19:47, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
Revisions
[edit]I have made revisions on my userspace at User:ProLifeDC/Charmaine_Yoest_Rewrite.
Posting them here for community review before I move them over to this page.
- The Kissling quote is unusable. It is shown with ellipses indicating text removed, but we do not have the original quote to determine context. It is likely that the original context is not so full of praise; it is likely that Kissling was misrepresented by reporter Eliza Gray. Kissling and Yoest are on opposite sides of the abortion argument. Binksternet (talk) 17:52, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
- The original source of that quote is an article in The New Republic which also includes the ellipses. Nothing was edited from that quote in the article to include it here ProLifeDC Are you really saying a New Republic reporter would be hostile to someone pro-choice? (talk) 01:01, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- I'm only focusing on Kissling, an outspoken pro-choice leader who we all can agree is very much against the programs that Yoest has promoted. It is a misrepresentation of Kissling to include only praise, even guarded praise, for Yoest. Binksternet (talk) 01:25, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- Kissling quotation removed, any other objections by anyone? Requesting if not that someone move over the updated version.... since I am loathe to now because of policy changes since the last time I updated this page.ProLifeDC (talk) 20:29, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Positions?
[edit]In the article it references: "In 1996 Deborah Shaw Lewis and Yoest co-authored Mother in the Middle, an examination of United States childcare policy.[6]" and in the next section states: "Yoest earned a Ph.D. in politics at University of Virginia in 2004, writing a dissertation on the politics of parental leave." Perhaps we should have a short section or at least a sentence or two on each of these works? What does Mother in the Middle say about childcare policy? What does her PhD dissertation say? What is her position on parental leave, etc.? Centerone (talk) 02:11, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
Any valid reason NOT to characterize Americans United for Life as "pro-life"?
[edit]I had a little back-and-forth with an admin on 3 May 2017 about the description of Americans United for Life in the opening paragraph. I changed it from "anti-abortion group" to "pro-life group" and the admin reverted my edits. Twice. With a threat of sanctions. The AUL article itself describes it as "an American pro-life public interest law firm and advocacy group." I've looked around wikipedia-ville and found some discussions (actually a LOT of discussions) about the terminology to be used to describe people and organizations on the two sides of the debate over abortion. In my research, I didn't find any outright prohibition on the use of the term "pro-life." Is there such a guideline? Thanks in advance.Bro rick (talk) 17:22, 6 May 2017 (UTC)

Some Proposed Changes
[edit]I work at The Heritage Foundation and would appreciate if another editor could make the edit for me to avoid any potential conflicts of interest. Augusta Cassada (talk) 18:04, 19 May 2021 (UTC)
Change "Early Life" section to "Early Life and Education"
Delete "policy analyst" and "conservative Christian activist group"" Yoest was born to Gilbert L. Crouse, Sr., a government economist, and Janice Shaw Crouse, a speechwriter for President George H. W. Bush and Senior Fellow at the Concerned Women for America.[3]
Board Member for the Institute for Religion and Democracy. https://theird.org/person/dr-janice-shaw-crouse/
Remove "during which time her mother was Taylor's Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs" because this point is not referenced in the footnote and should not be relevant to her biography: Yoest attended Taylor University in 1982 and 1983.
She then transferred to, and graduated from, Wheaton College, earning a bachelor's degree in politics in 1986.[4]
Some proposed changes
[edit]Edits for the first paragraph are below. I work at The Heritage Foundation and would appreciate if another editor could make the edit for me to avoid any potential conflicts of interest.
Delete "an American writer and political commentator", add Heritage Foundation title: Charmaine Yoest (née Crouse, born 1964) is a Vice President of the Heritage Foundation, where she leads the Institute for Family Community and Opportunity. This includes work on domestic policy issues including health care and welfare reform, education policy, family formation, women’s issues and religious liberty. https://www.heritage.org/staff/charmaine-yoest
Add new source after this sentence: She was formerly the president and CEO of the Americans United for Life, an anti-abortion group. https://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Society/2011/0813/Abortion-opponents-have-a-new-voice
Change "has" to "had": On April 28, 2017, it was announced that Yoest had been selected by President Donald Trump to serve in the United States Department of Health and Human Services, as the Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services for Public Affairs.[2]
Add new sentence: She later served in the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. https://www.heritage.org/press/the-heritage-foundation-names-dr-charmaine-yoest-vp-institute-family-community-and

[edit]Edit request for Professional Career and activism section. I work at The Heritage Foundation and would appreciate if another editor could make the edit for me to avoid any potential conflicts of interest.
Change "Professional Career and activism" to "Professional Career", remove "and activism"
Remove "a former official in the Department of Health and Human Services and" Jack was an Assistant Secretary in Governor Gilmore’s administration – never served at federal HHS. I would just delete this point.): After graduating college, Yoest went to work in Washington, D. C., as a Confidential Assistant in the Office of Presidential Personnel in the White House during the administration of President Ronald Reagan. Since 1990, she has been married to John Wesley "Jack" Yoest, Jr., an entrepreneur and academic; they have five children.[5] In 1996, Deborah Shaw Lewis and Yoest co-authored Mother in the Middle, an examination of United States child-care policy.[6]
- 10 is broken link: https://www.frc.org/advanced-search
In 2008, she was a senior adviser to Mike Huckabee's 2008 presidential campaign. Yoest was called to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee during the July 2009 confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor, whom Yoest unsuccessfully opposed. Link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oi8QcEwjGSk
In 2009, Yoest was diagnosed with breast cancer, and underwent six months of chemotherapy.[8] On July 1, 2010, Yoest testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee at the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee (and Solicitor General) Elena Kagan.[11]
Kagan Youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rDpiQNhnuI
Yoest also opposed Kagan's nomination, and called for a Senate investigation into alleged discrepancies in Kagan's testimony related to "partial-birth abortion".[12][13] In 2012, Yoest was appointed to the Congressional Award Board by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell.[14] Yoest was president and CEO of Americans United for Life from 2008 to 2016.[15][16] Yoest was featured in the 2013 Time Magazine thanksgiving issue along with Michelle Obama, Rick Warren and Joe Biden: https://time100.time.com/2013/11/25/time-for-thanks/slide/charmaine-yoest/ where she wrote about thankfulness for difficulties in life, including her experience with cancer: “I surely wouldn’t have chosen cancer for me, or my husband. But through sickness and sorrow, I found healing, unknown friendships and depths of love.”

[edit]Edit request for Position on abortion and birth control section. I work at The Heritage Foundation and would appreciate if another editor could make the edit for me to avoid any potential conflicts of interest.
Request change section title from Position on abortion and birth control to Public Policy Positions.
Image caption change from "Yoest poses for an official picture in March 2016" to "Yoest poses for a publication shot"
Highlight section, add citation: A 2012 profile in The New York Times said that Yoest's opposition to legal abortion "leaves no room for exceptions in the case of rape or incest, or to preserve the health of the mother. She believes that embryos have legal rights, and opposes birth control, like the IUD, that she thinks 'has life-ending properties'."[8] Chnage citation for correct viewpoint to: Writing in Time in 2016, co-authoring with Congresswoman Diane Black, Yoest outlined her pro-woman pro-life philosophy: https://time.com/4179553/march-for-life/
Add: Yoest has vigorously affirmed the unproven abortion–breast cancer hypothesis, which claims that having an abortion increases the risk of breast cancer.[8] She cites the American Association of ProLife Obstetricians and Gynecologists. https://aaplog.org/resources/references/induced-abortion-and-breast-cancer/
Remove "former head of the pro-life advocacy group Americans United for Life" because it is (repetitive): Yoest helped to develop the strategy for a Texas statute (remove "filled with obstacles to abortion services, in the guise of protections for women's health") replace with: "that required doctors providing abortion to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles and required abortion clinics to meet the Texas Health and Safety Code requirements for ambulatory surgical centers."

Charo cite (18) – this article does not provide a cite for the above assertion – the actual case is: Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt, 136 S. Ct. 2292 (2016)
Donald Trump appointed Yoest as assistant secretary for public affairs at HHS. She asserts that condoms do not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections. Charo cite
Yoest has claimed that contraception does not reduce the number of abortions, and says that to accept this argument "would be, frankly, carrying water for the other side to allow them to re-define the issue in that way".[18] Charo cite
