Rename
[edit]Moved to new rendering of name that has multiple references from other places. -- The Anome 13:35, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks, but please be aware of Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Korean), which specifies that the Revised Romanization of Korean is standard for all non-North-Korean topics. -- Visviva 12:59, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
copy edit
[edit]With such a short article, Copy editing is impossible. As a result I removed the template untill the article is expanded
- This article is still a stub
- The grammer is just fine until more infomation is added(No point in polishing the grammer only to have it all undone by someone adding infomation)
English name?
[edit]I saw a request at someone else's talk page to "englishize" this star map. Translating this to korean should be a feat similar to ko:팔만대장경 - since I don't know hanja, I looked up each one of the chinese words that compose the korean name. I'll put it up here as a reference:
Hangul: 천상열차분야지도 Hanja: 天象列次分野之圖
- 天 하늘 천 Sky
- 象 코끼리 상 Elephant
- 列 벌일 열 Open up
- 次 버금 차 Be beyond
- 分 나눌 분 Separate
- 野 들 야 Prairy
- 之 갈 지 grind
- 圖 그림 도 drawing
--Yonghokim 22:33, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
Maybe it would help if the title were segmented by word? Character-by-character translations won't necessarily aid in English translation (For instance, the topic has nothing to do with elephants.) Here's what I can gather, partly from Naver's Korean/English dictionary:
- 天象 (천상) = astronomical phenomenon
- 列次 (열차) = order/system
- 分野 (분야) = field (in the sense of a "field of study")/realm
之圖 (지도) = not sure; "지도" written as "地圖" means "chart/map"- 之 (지) = possesive particle
- 圖 (도) = chart/diagram
- Putting it together: "Chart for the Field of Astronomical Phenomenon Systems"?
The least we should do is put some spaces in between terms; the current title seems a bit too long for English speakers to parse. -- Calcwatch 05:42, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
- -- Calcwatch 22:28, 12 January 2006 (UTC) (updated)
- I found that Jeon Sang-woon translates it as "Chart of the constellations and the refions [sic] they govern," which seems reasonable and better than anything I could come up with, so I added it to the intro paragraph. -- Visviva 02:44, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
Origins and influence?
[edit]I removed a couple of sentences about the origins and influence of the map, because they didn't seem to be adequately verifiable.
- Origins: from Chinese and Arab models? If this does in fact date to a Goguryeo prototype, then an Arab connection is a bit farfetched, and not supported by any of our current references. The Chinese connection is more plausible, but I couldn't find anything to specifically support it.
- Influence: "a profound influence on Japanese astronomy"? That is the claim made by Ahn, in the web reference, but he does not cite any sources for this, and it is not repeated in any other reputable source that I can find. If the influence was so profound, surely someone else must have noticed it.
I'd be happy to see both of these sentences reinstated, if they can be adequately supported. -- Visviva 02:44, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:Korean-star-map.PNG
[edit]Image:Korean-star-map.PNG is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
