Notability??

[edit]

Although the AfD is snow closed as keep, I am still not convinced of its notability. As someone else more or less stated in the discussion "In the UK the non-major awards are almost completely ignored and mostly get only trivial mentions". Many trivial mentions don't make an award important. Famous names among the recipients also have no effect on the notability of an award, as notability is not inherited. And with just a few Google hits (about 32k hits boiling down to a mere 95 unique hits) there is little proof of notability. The Banner talk 14:48, 11 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Banner, the (or at least a) person who more or less stated this was me. My point was not quite that minor awards were almost completely ignored; rather, it was that certain awards (and I mentioned Turner and Booker) became celebs among awards and the journos worked themselves into (or feigned) much excitement over these (but with a reverence unusual in journalism; see for example Guardian writers on the "prestigious Deutsche Börse prize"), largely ignoring the rest.
So anyway, yes, this subject rates low in "notability" (as defined by Wikipedia). And so? (Do you have a suggestion to improve the article? Do you plan to launch a second AfD for it?) -- Hoary (talk) 23:48, 13 October 2014 (UTC); amended 03:43, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, I am not going to fight over it. I just wanted to state my disappointment in how the procedure was handled. The Banner talk 09:25, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If policies were ignored, then there are ways to appeal this. But although clear evidence of [Wikipedia defined] notability is indeed necessary for sizeable articles (e.g. the hagiographies and autohagiographies that routinely turn up at AfD), you might concede that short, simple, non-promotional articles on subjects such as this can be of value to readers, and that in-depth coverage in published sources is not required for the subjects of such articles. -- Hoary (talk) 11:08, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
But independent sources are nice. Now we have a collection of "We have given an award to ..." and "Hurray, they gave me the ... award". The Banner talk 12:02, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't notice any "Hurray, they gave me the ... award" sources. Can you please point me to a couple? -- Hoary (talk) 13:48, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
