I've always been intrigued by the large barn door at the back of church, above the door to the vestry/bell rope in the tower. Why is it even there? Surely not to simply help install what must be a very modest bell. As a bit of an expert on churches, I expect you may well have seen this or similar features before. Odd. A relic of the original barn? Court Farm Barn, Llanthony Priory, a service building to a monastic foundation, also has two storeys, which St Mary's may once have done. Looking at it, one can see how the basic structure could once have been a barn. An exit above a threshing floor? When I can finally get round to unpacking, I'll see what Pevsner says. I'd be very interested to hear if he ever visited or had an opinion. It's quite curious. I believe the church also had a "ting tang" bell, but I can't quite get to grips with this source. p.s. that image of the lime tree avenue in sunshine is really lovely. It's a simple thing that really makes the path to the church something special.

Yes, it is rather lovely and I thought warranted inclusion. I’m absolutely sure John Newman will have gone. Even though it’s “only” Grade II, he rarely, if ever, missed out a church. I look forward to being reunited with my Pevsner. KJP1 (talk) 15:31, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
