Request for Decency

[edit]

Listen, whoever is defiling this page, presumably a Horace Mann student, we kindly ask you to stop. One student's indiscression is not worthy of note on Wikipedia. We appreciate your attempt at humor, but the joke is dead. Thank you.

Though I do not know much about this model UN drinking incident, I believe that it is an important fact to add to a suspiciously self promoting paragraph.70.5.219.62 02:44, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Signature to all talk posts

[edit]

Whomever is also monitoring the article page, this is good, but please sign your posts on the talk page. Also, a subject as above is usual. Thanks Doc 21:37, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your addition of both subject and signature to the above are appreciated. Doc 22:58, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Model UN team

[edit]

Currently there is a sentence in the text that staes "The highly successful team attends college conferences every year (including those at Princeton, Harvard, and Johns Hopkins)." I have placed a {{Fact}} template after this sentence. This reeks of POV. What is the justification for the words "highly successful" since there are no verfiable result presented to back upo the claim. David D. (Talk) 16:34, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

They have won Harvard Model UN, Johns Hopkins Model UN, among others...you might find it online somewhere. --Osbus 02:42, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I have a big question about accuracy here. It says that Dalton's Model UN team won 11 out of 13 Best Delagate Awards and 6 honorable mentions. However this is impossible as in a committee no one school can win two awards. I hope someone will please explain this.70.5.219.62 02:44, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually yeah you can. Dalton often places multiple delegates on committees, and at the majority of conferences, there is no rule about one school winning multiple awards, and in fact this often happens. Credulouscit 21:07, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You don't "win" at UN. The "Best Delegate" and "Best Committee" awards are not always given to the truly best delegates. Dalton has a track record of being overly dominant at conferences, to the point of going past the true friendly spirit of what Model U.N. is supposed to be and turning it into a competition. If you want to check on how well I understand the topic, I attend a high school which also has a very good reputation in Model United Nations conferences, and has just had as successful of a Harvard Conference as Dalton. I am attending my first MUNUC (Model United Nations University of Chicago) in January 08, and I have already heard stories about Dalton from the Club Moderators, as well as Upperclassmen. For an example of how much Dalton blows their own horn, look no further than this article-they are the only school to actually have a mention in their wikipedia article about their Model United Nations club. As a matter of fact, I think they're the only school I've seen that actually has a wikipedia article. 76.24.132.218 (talk) 01:33, 18 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please, assume good faith about your other Wikipedia editors. Not everyone who edits articles about individual schools is an alum of the school, and certainly every editor should be striving for a neutral point of view in any article. Sometimes, that might get overwhelmed by stats or by boosterism, but it's no reason to assume that people have a malicious intent. And this is certainly not the only school with its own article; there's a whole team of people dedicated to writing, editing, and improving articles on schools on Wikipedia. For example, I'll assume when you say "St. John's" that you mean St. John's School in Houston. No? That's okay, because there are plenty of other St. John's schools that have Wikipedia articles. See what I mean? Cheers! Esrever (klaT) 02:22, 18 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, lets please strive for a neutral tone, but also lets be correct as every good MUNer should be, winning Model United Nations is a technical impossibility. A school can win numerous awards but a school cannot win Model United Nations. To state such a thing would be putting your school in a little to favorable light because you yourself are biased about your school. I am biased, everyone is biased in some way shape or form so lets go for correctness and if not a neutral then a dispassionate tone.

The Dalton Model UN team is also known to consistently receive the highest ranking positions at conferences in order to start off with an advantage. At certain conferences there are whispers of Dalton receiving preferential treatment in terms of the host showing significant bias towards Dalton during the awards ceremonies. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Williuhm (talkcontribs) 18:12, 2 November 2019 (UTC) Josh 20:38, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notable parents

[edit]

Is this section for real? It seems a little irrelevent? David D. (Talk) 20:17, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As an alumnus, I assure you it is extremely relevant to an accurate portrayal of the school's culture. Ribonucleic 01:00, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is Antonio Inoki really a notable parent of a Daltonian? I'm seeing the article on the name, but I'm hardpressed to believe whether he really should be listed here as he was added by an IP Address I've been watching who continuously vandalises this page. Chan Yin Keen | Talk 11:40, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, his son is in my grade. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.199.118.52 (talkcontribs) 21:11, 19 November 2006

Notable alumni

[edit]

Moving names without articles here until notability is determined and at least an article stub has been created. *Dan Barber; *Caio Fonseca; *Melissa Russo

Gave Missy a stub and put her back on the list. Ribonucleic 01:22, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Removing Ralph Ulysses as he has no Wikipedia article and nothing I can find in Google. Ribonucleic 20:10, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Notable parents

[edit]

Again names without articles here until notability is determined and at least an article stub has been created. *Tony Lo Bianco; *Dr. Lee Salk;

I've boldly removed the whole section. This is an article about Dalton, an institution that exists to educate children. The parents of those children, then are tangential at best to this article, and thus shouldn't be clumped together in a long list, especially one with no sources. Esrever (klaT) 15:45, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dunnan

[edit]

Expecting this will not be a popular addition to the page, I am creating this section so that people may air their thoughts on the subject. Speaking an alumnus of the Doctor's tenure, I believe my single sentence on the subject is NPOV, properly cited, and entirely relevant to the recent history of a prominent institution. Ribonucleic 01:41, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

charter school?

[edit]

I know nothing about the Dalton School, but nowhere in the article does it indicate that it's a charter school, so why's it in Category:Charter Schools in NYC? -Semisomna (talk) 23:45, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, no clue why it was in a category of charter schools. It's private, not public. Esrever (klaT) 23:51, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alumni

[edit]

There should really be categories in the alumni section - actors, journalists, musicians, politicians, artists etc. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.68.98.24 (talk) 01:14, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Co-curicular day

[edit]

One of the greater things about dalton is co-curicular day. Its basically like a carreer day, except with notable speakers.

Keynote Speakers in the past have included:

Justice Kennedy

[edit]

There was a big scandal earlier this year involving justice kennedy and this school. I think that it deserves a place here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.220.6.162 (talk) 22:43, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Children of color" "Students of color"

[edit]

The aforementioned quotes seem to harbor a pejorative effect. The relevancy is debatable. To say "children/students of color" is to assume Caucasian is not a color (a race in this instance) which is abusive and only perpetuates racial fissures in society. I advocate for this part to be edited or omitted. 75.70.81.85 (talk) 06:52, 19 March 2010 (UTC)Alexander[reply]

Location

[edit]

I think New York or Manhattan is acceptable for location. Including addresses of the school could pose a safety issue. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Robinpfox (talkcontribs) 22:46, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What? It's not as if the location is a secret. The school lists it on its own website for heaven's sake. Any idiot with a computer could google it and find it. Why would it pose a safety issue? Esrever (klaT) 01:24, 5 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dalton School --> The Dalton School

[edit]

This page must be renamed to the school's official name ("The Dalton School" or "Dalton"). I am a graduate of the high school and calling it "Dalton School" is incorrect. This is just like "The New School" in NYC. Its Wikipedia page is not "New School." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Newyorkerguy (talkcontribs) 07:45, 18 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No, it doesn't. The is almost never included as part of the name of an institution on Wikipedia. You'll notice that there are no "The University of Arizona" or "The Collegiate School" articles. As with things like alphabetizing library books, the the isn't considered part of the title. One easy trick to test is if the word the is capitalized when seeing it in print anywhere else. You're not going to find, say, The New York Times, writing about "The Dalton School", but "the Dalton School". Esrever (klaT) 15:17, 18 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If The New School can have the "The" in the title, why can't The Dalton School have it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Newyorkerguy (talkcontribs) 02:46, 19 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Because we have guidelines about such things here. See this to provide some clarity. Esrever (klaT) 03:08, 19 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Notable Educators: Suggested Edit.

[edit]

Eleanor Roosevelt- a First Lady of the United States- was an educator at this school.

In 1927, she joined friends Marion Dickerman and Nancy Cook in buying the Todhunter School for Girls, a finishing school which also offered college preparatory courses, in New York City. At the school, Roosevelt taught upper-level courses in American literature and history, emphasizing independent thought, current events, and social engagement. She continued to teach three days a week while FDR served as governor, but was forced to leave teaching after his election as president.[76][77] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleanor_Roosevelt)

Perhaps this should be added? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.110.216.31 (talk) 23:34, 15 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Tuition?

[edit]

Anybody know what the current tuition is? Seems that would be good info to include in the article, as the articles for similar schools include it. 2602:304:104C:5C69:E98D:CDC4:3AF2:E2FA (talk) 18:22, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Athletics "coi edits"

[edit]

Since both the old and the new text are unsourced, and since the new content is uncontroversial even if apparently COI, I would favor reinstating the new content. Needless to say, out of process COI edits that introduce dubious content should always be reverted. SPECIFICO talk 13:30, 10 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I think the broader question is whether that information is encyclopedic in any form. Too many of these school articles are brochures and not helpful to the reader. That said, no issue if you or any other uninvolved editor decides to re-instate it. Star Mississippi 14:52, 10 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
