Some of the article has long quotations. It could distract readers. Is there a way to fix? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Augerspectre (talkcontribs) 17:08, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Some suggestions re: formatting and content

[edit]

This article could benefit from building out a more robust citational network. It also needs some significant reformatting, as much of it is currently a list of quotations about disability culture that aren't necessarily contextualized within this article or providing readers with new information on the topic. I plan to chip away on this sometime soon!

This article currently mentions Deaf culture and alludes to some historical tensions and discourse around Deafness and disability. It would be worth either fleshing this out a bit more in its own section of this article, or adding it as a related article. There is definitely a lot of overlap in the Venn diagram of Deaf culture and disability culture, but it also seems that many culturally Deaf people do not identify with disability and would rather characterize being D/deaf as a linguistic minority experience, while others do.

Another suggestion I have would be to delineate some distinct impairment-specific disability cultures in a section of the article (i.e., neurodivergent people may have specific community practices or terms that are distinct from, say, chronically ill or physically disabled people). This article is about disability culture broadly (that is, a cross-disability culture), but adding some additional context with regard to specific shared values and cultural practices that are shaped by certain types of disability experiences might be useful for readers.

My last thought is that, overall, this article is very U.S. centric and future editors should attend to this.
