I am in a group for a school project and we are going to be creating a seperate page for the American Polled dorset.--SJRick (talk) 16:06, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Although it's good to hear that you plan to expand the information available on Wikipedia, unless the American Polled is a distinctly different breed, it would be preferable to expand the Polled information within this article, rather than create a new one. Having all the information together would be more helpful to the reader. PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 16:23, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The Polled Dorset is distinctly different than the horned Dorset, because it doesn't have horns. The page for the Polled Dorset should be created because there is a disambiguation between the Poll Dorset that was developed in Australia and the Polled Dorset that was developed at North Carolina State University. There is already a page for the Australian Poll Dorset, so I don't see why there shouldn't be a page for the American Polled Dorset as well. Rebaduck (talk) 15:47, 20 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I still think that expanding this article first is the preferable option, and I notice you have been given similar advice at the Agriculture WikiProject. I am not an expert on sheep breeds, so am gleaning info from Wikipedia itself, but it seems apparent to me that the Australian Poll Dorset was specifically bred by crossing the Dorset with other breeds, whereas the American Poll Dorset resulted from a spontaneous genetic mutation, rather like a sport on plants, and hence is just a variation of the Dorset. Page name

[edit]

This page should be at Dorset Horn, the name this breed is known by in reliable sources including the Watchlist of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust and the transboundary bred listing in DAD-IS. If no-one objects I plan to move it in a day or two. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 13:23, 4 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
