Birth name

She does not give that out - see "Dove Cameron Interview". October 25, 2013. I was actually born with a different name...My birth name is actually on year books and my birth certificate, but other than that, I have nothing to do with it. Celeste?

I can't seem to find a reliable source for her middle name being Celeste. I find a lot of sources that are less than reliable, and I'm worried that sourcing it to any of those might just be circular. The best I can find is from GQ Mexico, but I'm still pretty dubious about that. I'm thinking if we can't find a better source, we should probably take that out. -- irn (talk) 14:29, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

GQ is a reliable Mexican magazine. I do not see the reason why it stops being a reliable source.--Philip J Fry / talk 15:51, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
Sorry, that wasn't clear. The article itself strikes me as dubious. It's a puff piece about how beautiful she is; it's not journalism. Lines like De ojos verdes, rostro angelical, melena rubia y un gran sentido del humor, Dove no sólo se ha convertido en una de las actrices consentidas del público juvenil, sino también de la redacción de GQ México. Admira toda la belleza de esta Lolita en nuestra foto galería… make me question the seriousness of the article, and it certainly doesn't look like a piece with rigorous fact-checking. I wouldn't trust it as the only source. -- irn (talk) 17:09, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
That article was dated March 2016, info was added to this article with this edit in June 2014 using this twitter message as the reference for the middle name. Likely CQ fact checking consisted of looking at the existing Wikipedia article at the time. In that Twitter message there is one reference to Celeste and it was a comment by someone not Cameron. There was a picture there that is no longer available to see that might have supported Celeste but I can no longer verify but may have at the time, still we no longer have the original proof supplied for inclusion in this article. IMDb also supports a middle name but again may be reflects us which is one of the reasons we don't use IMDb for bio info but fact checkers for fluff article might very well use. Geraldo Perez (talk) 19:21, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
Good call! I found an archived version of the tweet she's replying to, and it does says "Chloe Celeste Hosterman". Cheers, -- irn (talk) 19:37, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

Personal life

She is dating Thomas Doherty but every time the info is added it gets removed Snarls200 (talk) 02:46, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

The quick and easy justification for removing that material is that it is unsourced. But if that were the sole reason, I would look for a source. Instead of looking for a source, I deleted it, and I apologize for not explaining my reasoning better.
There's a Wikipedia policy dealing with our treatment of living people, and that states "Biographies of living persons ("BLPs") must be written conservatively and with regard for the subject's privacy. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a tabloid" and later gives an example: ""John Doe had a messy divorce from Jane Doe." Is the divorce important to the article, and was it published by third-party reliable sources? If not, leave it out. If so, avoid use of "messy" and stick to the facts: "John Doe and Jane Doe divorced."" Wikipedia also has a policy on what should not be in the encyclopedia, which states: "Even when an individual is notable, not all events they are involved in are."
Taking all this together, my take away is that if a relationship isn't a significant part of a person's biography, it's best to leave it out. Because she dated Ryan McCartan for years and was briefly engaged to him, it makes sense to include it. Whereas her current relationship just isn't there yet. Cheers, -- irn (talk) 16:52, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

Her French involvement

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section.

Some dispute as to whether or not the statement

Cameron has stated she is of French descent, and is a fluent speaker of French, having spent many years of her life growing up in France.

with source

Cameron, Dove [@DoveCameron] (September 28, 2014). "To my loves like: 'thought u were born in Seattle not France!1' I was! I'm French, I speak French, & I grew up going there a lot. Das all.💕" (Tweet). Retrieved October 6, 2014 – via Twitter.

belongs. This statement is from her verified twitter and is not an exceptional or self-serving claim per my judgement and meets the requirement for use in WP:ABOUTSELF. The counter is that because she has not spoken French when it was appropriate means her statement about herself is false and should be removed from the article. I disagree and trust her to be truthful. The statement as written makes it clear she is talking about herself and the reader does have an opportunity to make their own judgments about her veracity. Geraldo Perez (talk) 19:32, 27 May 2018 (UTC)

I am sure that the subject is truthful but the statement above either needs to be qualified heavily. I raised the issues on the basis of item 1 and 4 of WP:ABOUTSELF. Item 1 prohibits the usage of such a source as Twitter when it is "unduly self-serving nor an exceptional claim" and item 4 prohibits the usage when there is "reasonable doubt as to its authenticity". As it pertains to item 1: "...is of French descent" is fine if its qualified, however, "spent many years of her life growing up in France"? Her life is accounted for from ages 1 through 15. How could it be possible that she spent "many" years "growing up" in France? An fluent speaker in French? She has been on multiple French news outlets unable to speak a single word of French:
Here she sates on Twitter: (Cameron, Dove [@DoveCameron]):
  • September 10, 2014: "no, I wish! I speak some French."
  • September 28, 2014: "To my loves like: 'thought u were born in Seattle not France!1' I was! I'm French, I speak French, & I grew up going there a lot. Das all."
Take for example this interview with Entrainment Weekly: "I went to Paris a lot growing up because, by blood, we’re crazy French, and my parents wanted their kids to have two feet in their culture." I can take this source to mean that she is of French descent, thats fine. But the fluent in French part? There needs to be a real source for that. Here is a bit from Sweety High (what a name): "[Dove Cameron] is "totally fluent in French." It then shows a video of Cameron barely running through a basic sentence in French.
Heres what I think, based off of the sources, she is of partial French descent, she vacationed in France a couple of times and speaks basic, conversational French. The subject is leaning into and overstating her Frenchness. This is not uncommon. If it were to be put into the article it would need to be qualified as such:

On Twitter Cameron stated that she is of French descent and speaks some French. She also stated that she "spent many years of her life growing up in France." (w/ cite)

LivinRealGüd (talk) 20:18, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
I'd go for that, seems like a reasonable way to state the key data. Geraldo Perez (talk) 20:44, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
If we say that she stated that she speaks some French, we're misrepresenting her statement, which we should avoid. It's probably best to leave out the bit about her speaking French and maybe living in France, too. Per Aboutself, we could include it as is if it were uncontested, but I think you've demonstrated that she is overstating her fluency and general Frenchness. My French isn't very good, but her note to her French fans is just "bonjour, mes amours, je t'aime, je t'aime, je t'aime". But "je t'aime" is for a singular "you", and she's writing to a plural "my loves". That seems like a really basic mistake. -- irn (talk) 20:54, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
We could drop "some" from the statement and leave it unqualified and also not conflicting with her statement. The EW reference is a good secondary source to add for the info. It appears we do not have sufficient justification for Category:American expatriates in France so that should be removed but need something in the article to justify French descent and related categories. Geraldo Perez (talk) 21:04, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
@irn, you're right, it should be "Je vous aime". Vous is formal and plural. Anyway, @Geraldo Perez, I think we should keep the qualifications, and keep the word "some" (as she states in her previous tweet). So: "Cameron stated on her Twitter that she is of French descent and speaks some French." That seems to be the most accurate of statements. LivinRealGüd (talk) 21:25, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
The EW source supports spending significant time in France although apparently not significantly enough to be considered an expatriate resident. We could probably capture the fact that she is of French descent, speaks some French, and spent a significant amount of time in Paris because of her parents desire for her to experience their culture. Need both the tweet and EW sources. We can make a single statement using both her tweets and the EW source for most of that. Geraldo Perez (talk) 21:37, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
Maybe it's just me, but "I speak French" conveys to me a level of fluency much greater than "I speak some French", which is why I see it as misleading. Do you disagree? Beyond that, from everything we can see, she speaks very limited French. Given what we can tell about her level of French, I see no good reason to even mention it in the article. -- irn (talk) 21:41, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
I can get on board with what irn is saying. The subject either is shifting her level of fluency or has a very inflated conception of what it means to "speak French". I have distant relatives from Italy and I traveled to Rome twice in my childhood where I ordered some food in Italian. Does that mean I am Italian or Italian-American? I also don't think it can be said that she spent a "significant time in France". She may have spent a "significant time" in her birth place of Seattle, her hometown of Bainbridge Island, Washington, and then in Los Angeles, but not in France. Social media

I had found her social media book account. Like one she would read off of. but I did not know if it counted as one. Www.wattpad.com/dove-_-Cameron/ anyone have any clue? Because the account looks clean and doesn't run back to any activity expect for one book that was deleted. But it was her personal biography that was stated that she wrote. Songwriter

Songwriter is being added as a notable occupation in the lead and infobox. Nothing about that is mentioned in the article itself. No reliable secondary sources that describe her as such, talk about her songwriting, evaluate it. She has a songwriting credit as part of a team of songwriters on one notable charted song, not sufficient to say this is a notable occupation for her. Whatever input she gives to a team of professional songwriter is more an adjunct to her being a singer who sings songs written for her. Geraldo Perez (talk) 14:37, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

I've found these (1 2 3 4) sources that talk about her songwriting within her career. I'm not on either side of the discussion (for once lol) but I thought I'd just throw these into the ring. – DarkGlow17:18, 21 May 2022 (UTC)
There should be something in this article then that talks to that. Still those are all primary source interviews with her that would be counted as self-promotion. It would be better to have some secondary sources for support. Geraldo Perez (talk) 18:30, 21 May 2022 (UTC)
