Lat & Long
[edit]Don't know how accurate that lat/long reading is, got it from spam URL redacted. I doubt it's very precise though, it's just farmland according to Google Maps. Ah, using this greasemonkey script revealed these rough coordinates: 32.25E 148.61S. It was only a few dozen kilometers off... Tzarius 7 July 2005 12:46 (UTC)
"Media Hub"
[edit]"Dubbo is considered a media hub in many respects." I live very close to Dubbo and I have never heard it referred to as a media hub. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Terlob (talk • contribs) 09:04, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
'Famous' Dubbo Quotes
[edit]Referring to the local RSL club as the 'rissole' or the 'arey' is hardly unique to Dubbo. There's no shortage of Commercial Hotels around Australia either and I doubt if many of them haven't been nicknamed 'the mersh' before. And can Dubbo really claim any particular connection to the expression 'eatin's cheatin'? If there aren't any better Dubbo quotes than those I think this section should be deleted. - Gimboid13 07:08, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

link to City of Dubbo?
[edit]I see there was much discussion about keeping both this page and the City of Dubbo page, and can accept the reasoning behind this decision. Should we, though, add a link early on to the other page? something along the lines of 'for the Local Government Area of Dubbo, see City_of_Dubbo'. I figure there's a protocol for this somewhere, I just can't see it anywhere. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by WotherspoonSmith (talk • contribs) 12:39, 3 May 2007 (UTC).
Regional Business Magazine
[edit]Hi having a look at the past posts, I am a bit confused as to the rational behind listing, is it controlled by Dubbo City Council, sorry just confused, I am the owner of the The Regional Business Magazine which is published out of Dubbo and would like it added to the page under print media, yes it is a commercial company the same as rural press and the dubbo city news, so listing shouldnt be a problem I hope, please let me know if you can add it, and a link to our online resource the same as the liberal as well, please link to www.regionalbusiness.com.au Regards and thanks Upta 04:00, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- I checked out www.regionalbusiness.com.au and it doesn't seem to be particularly about Dubbo. Wayne Connor 07:01, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
- I agree with Wayne. The magazine has little to do with Dubbo specifically. I've shifted a (brand new) deadlinked mention from a list of local media, to a mention as a locally produced regional magazine, as this is the only significance I can see to a page about Dubbo.
- Upta's account seems to have closed. If you read this, Upta, the page is not controlled by Dubbo Council. External links policy is at WP:EL, and I can't see your resources meeting any of these criteria. While asking someone else to link to your site is not technically a self link, Wikipedia is not a place to advertise or increase your own profile. External links should not be commercial sites. They should add new info, and not opinions. So no, I won't link.WotherspoonSmith 12:52, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
largest local industry is tourism?
[edit]Do we have some way to substantiate the statement that tourism is the 'largest' local industry? ABS stats (on the LGA) have 'health services' as the major regional employer, most of which would be centred in the city itself. the page already says the hosital is the second largest employee. Any other sites I can find (eg council) state only that tourism is a 'significant' local industry. regionally agriculture is the economic backbone, locally the support of this as a regional centre is an economic focus. Is there anything I've missed?WotherspoonSmith 13:04, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
- I think you are right, Council page says "Tourism brings in excess of $78 million per year to Dubbo and attracts 545,000 visitors annually. It is a significant local industry..." Wayne Connor 03:03, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

New Link?
[edit]I have a Dubbo website that I host: dubbo.org that is a collection of reviews and local advice about Dubbo for visitors. Such things such as bushwalks, parks, farmer's markets, public toilets, field naturalists club, sporting groups off the beaten track stuff, etc. The site is not official in any way, but it's been going for 5 years, appeared in the local paper etc. Happy for someone to place a link if they think it adds anything unique, but I am owner so I can't. Thanks
- Before doing so, though, you should read WP:EL, and the recent history of this page, where this issue has been discussed and erased. WotherspoonSmith 12:52, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
The link has been there since December 2005. Earlier this year someone (a non-registered user)was repeatedly removing the link, a discussion arose, but quite personal by this person about me. As a result the dubbo page was semi protected to stop this person removing the link! When the protection ended, the link was removed again.
Rather than keep adding the link again, or applying to have the Dubbo page protected, I though it would be good to start from scratch and discuss the merits of the link itself without reference to anything personal.
I would encourage you to have a look at the dubbo.org link on it's own merits, and post your opinion as to if it best be included or not. Then a discussion can happen, and some consensus form. I don't mind it you speak for or against it, but back up your reasons, based on the merits of the link itself.
Thanks! Wayne Connor (talk • contribs) 07:45, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
- (Restoring my deleted talk page discussion) - This link violates WP:EL primarily because of the advertising (Google ads) found on the site. Postoak 19:39, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, especially if you get paid each time a visitor clicks on the advertising, according to Google Adsense. Please see WP:EL#Advertising and conflicts of interest. You should be OK if you remove the ads, otherwise I feel the link is inappropriate. Postoak 23:55, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
- Reminder: deleting or refactoring comments by another user on an article's talk page is in violation of WP:TALK. I don't recall giving anyone my permission to remove the comments that I left here, especially since they are recent. Postoak 06:12, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

WP:EL#Links_normally_to_be_avoided says '5. Links to sites with objectionable amounts of advertising.' It doesn't say links to sites with any advertising. I'm wondering how the dubbo.org site's advertising is objectionable? For example, the Houston page and others have links to Yahoo Maps which has advertising banners. (When I looked, Hertz rent-a-car) Wayne Connor 13:24, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
- Which "Houston" page is this? Thanks Postoak 16:43, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
- Objectionable because you profit each time a user clicks on the ad. As I stated on my talk page, you are promoting this when you add your link to the Dubbo article. If you feel that I'm incorrect (and apparently all of the other editors who have removed this link in the past), we can request an additonal opinion at Wikipedia:Third opinion if you like. Postoak 17:00, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
Houston, Texas, down the bottom under external links is Yahoo Maps, which has a banner add. Today's featured wikipedia article, Boston, Massachusetts has as it's third external link the chamber of commerce, which has what appears to be paid banner adds down the bottom. It is relatively small so I would consider it appropriate. The fourth link to the travel page has a whole column of paid adds. Hence, I don't think advertising is a problem, as long as it in not an 'objectionable amount.'Wayne Connor 23:52, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
- Perhaps a third opinion can help, I will request assistance. Thanks, Postoak 04:51, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
- I'm here to provide a third opinion and, after reading through this section, suggest that it is a conflict of interests for User:Wayne Connor to add this link; remember that "you should avoid linking to a website that you own, maintain or represent, even if the guidelines otherwise imply that it should be linked. If the link is to a relevant and informative site that should otherwise be included, please consider mentioning it on the talk page and let neutral and independent Wikipedia editors decide whether to add it." - from WP:EL. Neutral and independent Wikipedia editors have decided against inclusion and until this changes, policy states that the link should not be included. Moreover, the links seems to fall under "3. Links mainly intended to promote a website." (see WP:EL#Links normally to be avoided). More to the point, this article already has several perfectly good external links to official sites that have neither advertisement nor conflict of interest issues. In a nutshell, User:Wayne Connor should not continue to add the link to the article. D4g0thur 06:38, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks D4g0thur, with three editors all against it I'm happy to leave it at that. But just for the record, I was not adding the link, I was requesting someone else to as per wikipedia guidelines. And I'm sorry Postoak but I can't take the adds off as they just cover hosting costs. I don't need the wikipedia link for promotion, it was genuinely for the sake of wikipedia not dubbo.org that I requested the link, dubbo.org rates higher than wikipedia in google search on Dubbo. But thanks both for your opinions. I would say consensus is against it so we'll leave it there. Wayne Connor 14:13, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
- I apologise if I'm making a mistake but this diff looks like you adding the link. Regardless, it doesn't matter now as the issue has been sorted. Happy editing! D4g0thur 09:06, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
Actually, that was me undoing this diff, not adding anything! Wayne —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.76.175.86 (talk) 10:19, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Outback dome
[edit]There is no such thing as an "outback dome" in in Dubbo -
I removed it.
'Slab' courthouse?
[edit]History section is in urgent need of revision. The statement: "by 1897 Dubbo had a general store, Carrier Arms, a slab courthouse, a jail and a police hut." is surely inaccurate - the current magnificent courthouse would have been completed by then, and the town surely boasted more than just a general store. I'm going to put a few photos in from my recent trip including the unique (for a Western NSW town) examples of Victorian terrace houses, Goal, Courthouse etc. --MichaelGG 13:28, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
Climate (temperature) statistics
[edit]The temperature data in the box at the top of the page says that the mean maximum temperature is 33°C and that the mean minimum temperature is 2.6°C — but these must obviously be the mean summer (or more accurately January) maximum and the mean winter (July) minimum. I'm not sure how to change this though... Ondewelle (talk) 21:05, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
- I think it means the mean for the whole year (All months mean put into one yearly mean). Bidgee (talk) 21:15, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
- No, it's not for the whole year. See, for example, the relevant page of the website of the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, which gives the average annual maximum at Dubbo Airport as 24.3°C and the the average annual minimum as 10.1°C, with average January maximum as 33.0°C and average July minimum as 3.1°C. I think the article is misleading (in fact, wrong) as it stands. Ondewelle (talk) 21:28, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
- Fixed both temps and rainfall also. Bidgee (talk) 21:37, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
- Wow, such promptitude! Thank you! Ondewelle (talk) 21:42, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Population
[edit]i live in dubbo and couldnt help but notice that there is wrong information in the article, dubbo's population as of 2009 is over 40,300 in a residential population. dubbo's population has not jumped 10,000 people in 3 years as we have had a steady population increase of between 200 and 300 people per year if anyone can prove me wrong please inform me —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.184.12.125 (talk • contribs) 12:14, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
- We only use the urban population rather then the whole City of Dubbo (as it includes other small towns and villages where as urban covers the CBD and suburbs). ABS population stats for Dubbo (urban). Bidgee (talk) 12:19, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
i can understand where you are coming from, however what i read was an interview with the mayor of dubbo via the daily liberal, if you can try to look it up, it should back me up, he was saying that the population of the greater urban area (not including villages and farmland) was 40 thousand 3 hundred and something and that he along with other councillors were very pleased and that they thought that the population would never reach the crucial mark, and furthermore my former school principal paul loxley who was at the time also a councilor of the city of dubbo, apon question told me that the population of the urban area of dubbo exluding farms was aproximatly 40 000 , give or take 1 or 2 thousand either way. and i know that i heard him right, as we were studying population differentials from urban areas from farmlands., if im correct, another census should be held later this year, does that mean, that apon completion of the census, that population data on this page would be updated? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.217.7.66 (talk) 15:42, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
Glenn McGrath
[edit]Cricinfo says Glenn McGrath was born in Dubbo. Shouldn't he be included in the notable persons list?Avman89 (talk) 23:24, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, as long as his article agrees which it does. (Crusoe8181 (talk) 02:56, 11 August 2011 (UTC)).
