As a student at Lamar Consolidated High School, in Rosenberg, Texas, "Popeye" (a nickname given by his grandmother) excelled in football and track. As a 185-lb senior, he was one of the marquee running backs in Texas, along with fellow Houston-area standouts Craig James (Stratford High School, Houston) and Eric Dickerson (Sealy High School, Sealy). He carried the Mustangs to the state quarterfinals in 1979, but the team lost to James and his Stratford High School Spartans in the Houston Astrodome. In track, he was anchor of the 440-yard relay team, and also ran the 100-yard dash, in which he recorded a personal best in the 9.9-second range. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.31.47.95 (talk) 19:01, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
