Issues

This page needs lots of clean up. It is basically a long list of lists. It also reeks of boosterism. --Thunder 15:11, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Sources and cleanup

There appears to be a lack of citation to the information contained in this article. Sections needing citation and cleanup include: Main Campus Statistics, Research/University Facts, History, Future of East Carolina, Student Demographics, Greek Life, Alumni Association and Notable Alumni, Athletics, Traditions and Events, Administration.

I'll try to sit down and contribute to these sections and give them a unified layout with other Universities while utilizing the Manual of Style

The East Carolinian

The East Carolinian is a newspaper that is independent of the university. While students run it, it is not funded by the university. I see no problem with there being a link to it on the university's wiki page, there is no need to merge the two, as other university papers are not merged with their respective universities either. Is the citing problem fixed?

I went through and corrected any non-cited numbers and facts. What does the "ECU umbrella" need next?

I am an contributer to all thing ECU. What articles needs to be created or expanded upon? I am thinking a "History of East Carolina University" next. Any other ideas?

After a quick review of the article, it needs fair use rationales for the logos, reformatting of the citations, and the inline citations go directly after the punctuation. I'd recommend fixing these, or the article may be failed. --Nehrams2020 09:02, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

On hold, it has a few issues that need to be addressed. Though the formatting of the references isn't too pretty, that really isn't something for which I can exclusively denounce the article. After the lead, the article is composed entirely of lists, some of these sections need to be converted to prose in some fashion. See also Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities. This is the third nomination. The first two listed the same legitimate issues and they have not been addressed. For this reason, it has been failed. Once the below issues have been addressed, the article can be renominated, but not before.

Issues

  • Are there no controversies that could be mentioned, to achieve "NPOV" and "all views".
  • Typically stand-alone years should not be wikified, although it is up to the writing editor. However, considering stand-alone years aren't consistently wikified throughout the article, I recommend removed the bracket from all stand-alone years. Done
  • Wikification of words needs only be done for words relevant to the topic and only in their first appearance. Brody School of Medicine is, for example, wikified in each of its many appearances. It should be wikified in the lead only and not again. Ensure this is true for all wikified words in the article... first appearance only. Done
  • Remove dead links that aren't relevant to the topic. Done
  • Only the first word in headers should be capitalized (per WP:MOS#Wording) unless the word is proper. In the case of Campus sub-headers, they don't even need to contain the word campus. Simply "Main", "Health Sciences/Pitt County Memorial Hospital", etc. "Colleges and Schools" → "Colleges and schools". "Greek Life" → "Greek life". Done

  • First paragraph
    • I recommend removing the information about where the name derived from. It's kind of self-explanatory that it's located in Eastern North Carolina. Additionally, the article cited as the reference for this statement says nothing about it. As for the "is considered the flagship of Eastern North Carolina" statement; it sounds good, but if you can't find a reference it needs to go. Done
    • Raleigh needs to become Raleigh, North Carolina.
    • "The University is home to many colleges..." This sentence needs to be moved down to be the first of the second paragraph.
  • Second paragraph
    • The lead should be a summary of the article, here new information is introduced into the article that is not expanded upon in the body. This information needs to be worked into the article and removed from the lead. Done
  • Third paragraph
    • This information is detailed in the infobox and is therefore not necessary to be included in the lead. To mention it is the largest university in NC is good, but it needs to be worked into an appropriate place in the lead (first paragraph) and adequately sourced. Done

  • Now the lead is a bit short. Something to discuss once other issues are resolved.

    • "AN ACT TO STIMULATE HIGH SCHOOL INSTRUCTION IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS OF THE STATE AND TEACHER TRAINING" → An Act to Stimulate High School Instruction in the Public Schools of the State and Teacher Training. Done
    • If he went by T.J., his name should be written out as "Thomas Jordan (T.J.) Jarvis" in it's first appearance, then "T.J. Jarvis" in subsequent appearances (see Main campus). Done
    • '"Father of ECU,"' → '"father of ECU",'.
    • "Although its purpose was to train "young white men and women," there ..." Move the comma to the outside of the quotation per WP:MOS#Quotations which states the punctuation only goes inside the quotes when it is a complete quote. Done

  • Main campus
    • T.J. Jarvis was an ambassador to Brazil? Fascinating. Reference it. Also, ambassador should be lower case per Wp:mos#Titles. Only capitalize when used as a title (followed by a name). Done
    • This paragraph also needs to be reworded for better flow. Fewer periods, more commas.
  • Health Sciences Campus/Pitt County Memorial Hospital
    • "The Health Science Campus is situated at and near Pitt County Memorial Hospital(PCMH). Pitt County Memorial Hospital is ..." How is it at and near at the same time? Explain. Also space between "Hospital" and "(PCMH)". Pitt County Memorial Hospital (after the period) → PCMH. You put it in parenthesis for a reason. Done
    • "The area is about 2 miles west of Main Campus on 205 acres (0.8 km² with nearly 950,000 square feet of academic and research space in thirty-nine buildings." There is an opening parenthesis, but not a closing one.

  • I just realized the "Interim" title. If you wanted to re-place "Interim Chancellor" in front of Dr. William Shelton, that would be appropriate. Capitalization in place as it is being used as his formal title. Done

  • Citation templates need to be used for all sources and completely filled in, as applicable.
  • Books, magazines, newspapers, PDF files, etc. need page specifications in the citaion.
  • Relying too heavily on the website of the topic is not appropriate.
  • When using one source multiple time, name the source (see WP:CITE) so that it only appears on the list once.

7. This article states nothing concerning the statement for which it is the reference.

... I'm noticing a lot of reliance on the school website. There should be more reference to third-party sources, less to the website of the topic. Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium is in the beginning process of expansion. Thirty-five hundred seats will be added to the East side (endzone) prior to the 2009 season. The new addition will be constructed for easy addition of 3,500 more seats at a later date. On the south side a new press box and office complex will be built. The total height will be about six stories, with a two-story press box, luxury suite level, academic space and the football offices.

Just because it is in some newspapers, doesn't mean it is notable enough for Wikipedia. This article doesn't have enough reliable sources, the people that are being added don't meet WP:BIO and a majority of the content is unsourced. Plus adding stuff like this or stuff that is in the Controversies section like #REKT or in the history section when SEX is in all caps. Stuff like this doesn't meet Wikipedia guidelines.   • Redirect - There is really nothing to merge as nothing of consequence is independently sourced). The vast majority of the article was nearly incoherent rambling, rumors about past members (WP:BLP issues in some cases) and such. If the user wants to document this kind of stuff, a blog might be a good choice. A website specifically dedicated to the East Carolina University Student Government Association would take more work; presumably they'd want it to be coherent. Party School

Someone probably should add something about this place`s reputation as a party school...I`m not going to do it because I know what it will lead to..I`ve never met a student that went here who didn`t say they`re majors weren`t drugs, drinking, and sex...I understand that`s college campuses everywhere in the US these days but ECU has a definite reputation for being extreme regarding this..I know it will never be let into the article but it`s the truth..I`ve met a lot of ECU students over the years and they all said the same thing..they barely passed NC public high school...got into ECU because mom and dad could pay for it..generally never cracked a book and only went there to have a good time....I know the truth hurts sometimes...live with it. 66.191.216.112 (talk) 02:13, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

Suggested improvements

I read through the article. I think the prose needs quite a bit of work before it will be up to FA status. The sentences seem to be either short and stubby or very long and unwieldy. Overall, it doesn't flow that well. Other suggestions follow:

    • I've never heard of a university described as an "intensive research university". What does that mean?
    • Need nonbreaking spaces between numbers and their units/qualifiers (25,990 students, its)
    • Need wikilinks for full dates
    • This sentence is a little clunky- " In early August 2007, it was announced that the North Carolina General Assembly had approved and Governor Mike Easley had signed the budget including $25 Million for a new School of Dentistry at ECU with the first students expected no later than 2011."
    • "The students have an active social life." - This sentence probably needs to be removed. It would be impossible to prove that all students have an active social life, and it's likely that some students don't.
    • A lot of the prose is in passive tense; if possible, please switch to active tense. For example, the first sentence of history section would be much more understandable if it were not in passive tense.
    • Need a citation for this: "Today, ECU is the third-largest university in North Carolina with 18,587 undergraduates and 5,764 graduates, including the 290 Brody School of Medicine students"
    • It seems a little odd to have a section called "Future of East Carolina" in the midst of the History section. (also, the article title shouldn't be repeated in the section headings)
    • Image captions shouldn't end with periods unless they are full sentences.
    • Need citations for facts in the Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Expansion section (and sentences that begin with numbers should have the numbers written out)
    • "will be completed in 2007" - it's now 2008, so this needs to be updated
    • Is geteducated.com a reliable source? I question whether its ranking should be included in the article at all.

    • Need citations for much of the facts in Greek life section:

"The majority are located off or near 5th Street or 10th Street. Of the 16 social fraternities, seven currently do not own a house. Greek life started in 1958 with the introduction of four social fraternities: Kappa Alpha Order, Lambda Chi Alpha, Pi Kappa Alpha, and Theta Chi. Two years later, eight of the nine social sororities were founded.:

    • I would add wikilinks for NCAA Division IA and Conference USA
    • "Pirates" does not need ot be in italics
    • There is a citation needed tag after a sentence in Traditions and Events
