Goichberg and Marshall Chess Club Story
[edit]After researching for a few minutes, I'm fairly certain this story is false. There is a record of Geza Fuster playing in the Marshall Chess Club Open in 1979 here;
http://www.365chess.com/tournaments/Marshall_op_1979/24699
In 9 games in the tournament, Fuster scored 3 wins and 6 losses against players with an average Elo rating of roughly 2350. His own Elo at that time was 2300, so he lost rating points on the event. Writing that Fuster beat all the "Aspiring IMs" is a very ambiguous statement, but after further research, of the 6 players that beat Fuster (James Plaskett, Slobodan Pavlovic, Robert Sulman, E Meyer, Robert Gruchacz, and Marcos Paolozzi), it turns out that NONE of them were International Masters by 1979. Thus, all 6 were "Aspiring IMs", and each one defeated Fuster in the tournament. In other words, that story is rubbish.
