Dates of Marriage to Ralph Barton Problematical

[edit]

Unsourced paragraph indicates subject was married to Ralph Barton in 1925 and divorced in 1927 or 1928. Ralph Barton and Carlotta Monterey pages indicate that Barton and Monterey divorced in 1926.68.178.50.46 (talk) 23:48, 31 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"she changed her last name from "Taillefesse" to "Tailleferre" to spite her father, who had refused to support her musical studies"

[edit]

The word "fesse" means "buttock" in French. Couldn't this have had anything to do with it? Kostaki mou (talk) 16:20, 27 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sources appear to support the existing explanation. Do you have any to support your suggestion? Nikkimaria (talk) 19:00, 27 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I was making a suggestion, not an assertion. I do remember reading such a conjecture by someone else, I forget where. The possibility would certainly occur to many. Kostaki mou (talk) 00:11, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Kostaki is very right, here. 'Taillefesse' really translates to 'Big Arse'. And 'fesse' is a homophone with 'fèces', literally meaning 'excrement'. This is what brought me here in the first place. Only to find Kostaki being talked down here. Even though I can't give a source for verification (aside from the french dictionnaire...) the fact that her original family name has this meaning could and should be incorporated when mentioning her change of name. There's no wrong-doing in that. And by the way, which sources do YOU have to support the 'to-spite-her-father-only'-story, Nikkimaria? Even if it takes away a little bit of the tragical beauty of the narrative, it adds a little to the realism of a struggling composer having inherited a name quite unfit for positive publicity from a backward and abusive patriarch. You can be sure that anyone speaking a little bit of french will easily find out about the true meaning of her original name. Guess what they'll think about this article not even mentioning it... As above, if you have sourcing to suggest instead that she changed her name because it sounded dirty, please present that. Nikkimaria (talk) 03:37, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
