Redirect
[edit]Should this page be redirected to Britain as they both refer to similar topics? Regards, Rob (talk) 14:24, 28 July 2013 (UTC)

Political Definition
[edit]I can't help feeling that there is a need for this page to include "Great Britain" in a current political sense (ie the totality of England, Wales and Scotland, including all the islands that are part of those countries, such as Isle of Wight, Ynys Mon, Shetland Iles). Even if there isn't a page for the current political 'Great Britain', that neither the wikipage for Great Britain nor this disambiguation page really is appropriate for the political sense. Perhaps a link to Great_Britain#Political_definition on this page too? DrArsenal (talk) 15:28, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
- As I said just yesterday at Talk:Great Britain#area, there are two different definitions of Great Britain. One definition is the political definition, i.e. England + Scotland + Wales - including their offshore islands - and the other is the strictly defined island, excluding the offshore islands. I think the differences between the two definitions can be covered in one article.. The alternative is two articles and clearer disambiguation - but, is that really necessary? – I believe that there is no WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for the term 'Great Britain'. If you check the usage in English reliable sources (see, for example Books, Scholar, News, Trends, etc) you will see that island is not a primary topic. Heanor (talk) 15:26, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
- I personally would only expect "Britain"/"British"/"Great Britain" etc to refer to the island but apparently many people do use the term to refer to the UK. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:31, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose. I'm not sure what the links are trying to show, but the hat note at Great Britain works fine. I also think RM should take place at the talk page for Great Britain, not here, because that page is more high profile. Calidum 18:19, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
- I thought that RMCD bot automatically places a notice on every affected page. I'm ok if you move this discussion at the talk page for Great Britain. I'm trying to show that the island is not a primary topic for the term 'Great Britain'. --Heanor (talk) 18:23, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
- I think the DAB page is the correct location if the motive is to have no primary topic. In this case the proposal is only to move the island to disambiguate rather than to debate the preferred location of the island. Compare this to Talk:Isle of Mull#Requested move 27 May 2019 and Talk:Isle of Skye#Requested move 5 June 2019 where although the move of the DAB to the base name was also suggested the main thing was to move the islands to a different name. If a move request is only about disambiguation I'd tend to hold it on the page benefiting from the move which in this case is the DAB. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:53, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

- Oppose. "Great Britain" is the largest island in the British Isles. The island is the primary topic. The hatnote linking to other prominent uses and the DAB page works well. I also agree that this discussion should be taking place at the main article talk page, not on the DAB talk page. Rreagan007 (talk) 20:18, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose. Clear primary topic. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:56, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
