Kanagawa convention[edit]

Beasley identifies Hayashi Noboru's signature on the Japanese translation of the Dutch text of the agreement negotiated by Perry.<:ref>Beasley, William. (1955) Select Documents of Japanese Foreign Policy, 1853-1968, pp. 119-120 n2.</ref> Other sources like Cullen indicate that Hayashi Akira was the bakufu negotiator at this time.<:ref>Sewall, John. (1905). The Logbook of the Capatin's Clerk: Adventures in the China Seas, p.lxiv; Cullen, Louis. (2003). A History of Japan, 1582-1941: Internal and External Worlds, p. 178 n11.</ref>
