spelling

[edit]

first off, the original spelling of the article is "Jaroslav Spacek", not "Jaroslav Špaček". Second, go here: Wikipedia:Naming conventions (standard letters with diacritics) and here Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey/Player pages format#Use of diacritics and non-English characters and see that there are conventions in the works that go against your edit move and favour my edit move. Third, since it is very clear in wikipedia that the most common English form be used for article titles, have a look at the top ten google searches (minus wikipedia and English only websites) [1] :

Now, i have just shown you the top ten websites that deal with Spacek and none of them spell it with diacritics. I have also shown you two naming conventions (in the works) that don't use diacritics. I will also mention Wikipedia:Naming conventions#Use English words and Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English). It is clear that Spacek, not Špaček is the most common way of spelling his name in English. In fact, other than wikipedia, i don't know of any English publication that uses diacritics with his name.

Now, the burdon of proof is on you to show that "Jaroslav Špaček" should be the title of this article. I have shown you multiple reasons for "Jaroslav Spacek" and i will not accept a reasoning that "Jaroslav Spacek" is spelt "wrong" simply because that would mean that the majority of English publications are making a mistake and that is not for you or me to determine (otherwise it would be original research). I am moving the article back to its original spelling of "Jaroslav Spacek" and if you don't like it, let's discuss this on the talk page and not havea move war. There are some issues with your reasons (most notably that there is consensus problems with a number of those pages (can't say policies since some are not) you cited), but I really cannot say in this case there is a strong enough case for the correct spelling. After I found only one source in English [2] that uses the correct spelling, I decided to rest my case. I would always spell it Jaroslav Špaček, but Wikipedia should spell Jaroslav Spacek if that is what the overwhelming number of English sources use. Bayerischermann 07:27, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
For those of you actually looking to confirm it, Spacek appears on Page 84 (Adobe numbering). Is that an IOC publication or a Czech Olympic Committee publication? Doogie2K (talk) 19:39, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Czech Olympic Committee. It's a guide for the media. Bayerischermann 02:07, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Here's the 2006 Czech roster straight from the IOC [3] ccwaters 02:41, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
