What about the so-called "jazz bands" popular in former mining communities in Northern England and South Wales? These are really children's marching bands, typically instrumented with drums, glockenspiels and kazoos, and have nothing whatsoever to do with jazz music. --GCarty 15:37, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jazz ensemble as dialect[edit]

I have removed the reference to "jazz ensemble" as being a term from western dialects of American English. I can attest to its use in the American South, where it is scarcely less common than "jazz band." -- Rob C (Alarob) 17:38, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

List of notable Jazz bands[edit]

Tips[edit]

It is seeming likely that this article may end up as a collection of summaries with more info or see also links. While I do not see this as a problem, those summaries are at the moment lacking and are sorely needed. Specific facts such as you mention may be suitable as an aid the reader in understanding the subject and as a guide to what the other pages contain. CSJJ104 (talk) 19:52, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, this kind of turned out to be a tricky one to work on. Most of the sources I find are just about jazz, few sources talk about jazz bands themselves. What I was trying to do was find content that talked about an instrument's role in jazz. Lists[edit]

Personally I'm not a fan of 'Famous' or 'Notable' lists and don't really think they have a place on Wikipedia. Suggest removing list of Notable bands and festivals or moving them to more appropriate articles which already have lists: List of jazz musicians and List of jazz festivals.David Condrey (talk) 20:21, 24 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Rather than deleteing the list of notable bands I would be in favour of shortening it to, say 5, of the most important and adding brief descriptions of each one. These bands would, in my mind, ideally be important to the development of Jazz bands through pioneering the format, increasing the genres notability, or improvising performance techniques, giving the reader an insight into the development and history of the subject, and a guide to finding out more about this development. I agree with CSJ's sentiments, that a prose description of the most significant bands would be better. I also think musical styles should be discussed in the context of these significant bands (might need a few more than 5) - Evad37 [talk] 01:57, 26 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The article is now eligible for a DYK![edit]

I'm traveling in China, so I'm just passing by, but I'd like to let everybody know that the article has been expanded 5 times in the last seven days, and is therefore eligible for a DYK ("Did you know..."). DYKs appear on Wikipedia's Main page, so writing one would be another way of making the TAFI project visible! (I wrote one for Java Man two weeks ago.) Is someone up for it? @Coin945: I don't think so, no, because the DYKs appear as a bare list on the main page. We could always make a note of the TAFI affiliation on the DYK nomination, because it has its own page (like this one for Java Man). But the most important thing is that when we discuss the possibility of making TAFI return to the main page (if that's what we want), we can point to DYKs as a different kind of achievement than just improving articles from "start-class" to "C-class". copypaste removed[edit]

I've removed a large amount of commented-out material which was copypasted from http://www.allaboutjazz.com/best-quintets-sextets-and-big-bands-by-aaj-staff.php along with a note stating the editor's intention to return to it later. I believe this was a good-faith edit, but copyrighted material should not be added to articles, regardless of whether it is commented out or not. Also, the Quintets section is dangerously close to running afoul of the guideline on close paraphrasing. Nick Number (talk) 16:50, 30 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Had pasted in and commented out that info summarizing a list of some of the most notable and influential jazz bands, intending to come back later and reference it and write out the two subsections it was in. Wasn't able to get back to it as quickly as I'd planned because I've been swamped with work past couple weeks and at this point had all but forgotten about it. In the edit summary I left a note about having staged it there and invited anybody to help write out those sections. Whenever I'm working on an article, if I have some info that I'm referencing or that I find but don't have time to get to right away I like to write it in as a comment so it's easily assessable when I come back and anybody else editing can see it and potentially use it. Point[edit]

What's the point of this article? There are already articles about big bands, instruments, and the history of jazz. Should this be merged or deleted?
