Joel Burns is also the name of an openly gay member of the Fort Worth, Texas city council who, during the remarks and announcements portion of a city council meeting, gave a speech lasting nearly thirteen minutes showing photographs of youths who had committed suicide after having undergone bullying because they were gay or perceived to be gay by their peers. He went on to describe his own experiences with bullying during his youth and called upon bullied teenagers to hang in there because life gets better. He implored adults to make schools safe places for children to learn and grow, and not allow children to feel unloved and worthless. He encouraged despondent children to seek support from thetrevorproject.org or by calling him personally. An emotional video of his full remarks went viral and, on October 15, was shown on CNN followed by an Ari Velshi interview with Mr. Burns. Fortguy (talk) 22:07, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
