Shrimplin 01:03, 17 December 2006 (UTC)REAS--The Ritchie's first house in Topeka, built around 1856, still exists and is located at 1116 SE Madison in Topeka, Kansas. Directly south of that house is the home built by John and Mary Jane's eldest surviving son, Hale Ritchie. The Shawnee County Historical Society has purchased both properties. Currently the 1856 home is an interpretative site and is open to the public by appointment only, with the exception of "open house" days. The Hale Ritchie house, located at 1118 SE Madison, will be remodeled into an education center where students can come and learn the history of Topeka, Shawnee County and Kansas. John and Mary Jane Ritchie were champions of equality and freedom for everyone and took a stand for both! I encourage anyone interested in learning more about the Ritchie family to visit the Shawnee County Historical Society's website at http://www.shawneecountyhistory.org/ritchie.
