It's "kabuki theater".

[edit]

The page title needs to be changed to "kabuki theater". Or maybe "kabuki (theater)".

Nobody uses the term "kabuki dance". Here's a Google News search for "kabuki theater". Note the double quotes - right now it has "about 4,730 results".

I won't be the one to try to make the change. I have better things to do the fight endless edit wars. I'm dead certain there's at least one person reading this who will fight to the death to keep the silly "kabuki dance" title.

Hopefully, another person - you brave man (or woman) reading this - are full of energy and are ready to jump into the breach and make the change.

Merge this racist footnote into Political Theatre page

[edit]

This is an outdated, racist term[1] that would be better as a footnote or small section in political theatre. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.249.171.35 (talk) 14:28, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@172.249.171.35 so just because Slate magazine, a decidedly Left-wing publication, says a term is racist, it is racist? If this is now the burden of proof acceptable to Wikipedians for declaring language racist, there is a lot more wrong with this website than I thought.

Heck, by 172.249.171.35's logic, why isn't Slate's use of the term "seppukutime" racist?

The more we call things "racist," the less the term means, and the more often it is simply ignored, until it ceases to have any significance at all. Tpkatsa (talk) 21:11, 17 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rewrite and move?

[edit]

What shall be done with this article? As the comments above note, Kabuki dance may not be the best title – either because other terms are used, or because this one is deemed racist. Moreover, it is not clear whether the article should be about the phrase (see WP:WORDISSUBJECT), or about the political actions that it refers to.

There is currently no other article specifically about political acts that are deemed hollow or only for pretense. 'Political posturing' redirects here. The article formerly at 'Political theatre' is now at Political drama, and it treats a type of theatrical work, not a type of political discourse. Political theater is currently a disambiguation page.

During the 2012 AfD, some commenters noted that the word kabuki is about equally likely, in the US at least, to refer to political posturing or to Kabuki (歌舞伎), and argued to therefore keep this article. Others argued that the word is not notable as a word, and therefore the content should be deleted or sent to Wiktionary:kabuki. The discussion ended without consensus.

So, what should be done? I propose that (1) the article should be re-written to describe political posturing primarily, with description of this word and its US political usage as one subsection; and (2) the page should be moved to Political posturing over the current redirect. @AllThatJazz2012, Kintetsubuffalo, Anarchangel, Kendrick7, Andreas Philopater, Bearian, and Sandstein: Are there other suggestions? I'm not sure why I've been tagged (I don't recall editing or even reading this article at all) but I think that's a very sound suggestion. --Andreas Philopater (talk) 09:30, 23 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I pinged everyone who made suggestions at WP:Articles for deletion/Kabuki dance. Apologies if this is not of particular interest. Cnilep (talk) 23:43, 23 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have started a draft at Draft:Political posturing. Cnilep (talk) 03:58, 24 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I am fine with the consensus. Bearian (talk) 17:44, 25 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've moved Political posturing from Articles for Creation to mainspace. It is a commonly used expression so entirely suitable for a Wikipedia article. Sionk (talk) 13:12, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Draft and article are on same topic, and have overlapping but different content and can be folded together. No comment as to which title is more appropriate. Robert McClenon (talk) 17:11, 7 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Support merge of Kabuki dance into Political posturing#Kabuki on the grounds of both short text and context. There is also duplication (alluded to by Cnilep), and as a synonym I think that Kabuki dance is best covered on the same page. Klbrain (talk) 03:29, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
